Polycarbonate Tubing, 1/4" ID x 3/8" OD x 1/16" Wall, Clear Color 36" L Sale Price: $8.97 |

Polycarbonate is a transparent high molecular weight, linear, low-crystalline plastic. It is generally sought out for its very high impact resistance which approaches 30 times that of safety glass. Light transmittance is 90 percent. In addition to being a very hard plastic, it has a very high modulus of elasticity making it resistant to creep; it has excellent electrical resistivity, and an operating temperature range of -275 F to 250 F. It is generally unaffected by greases, oils and acids. Hardness is 112-125 Rockwell R (73-78 M Scale). Heat deflection temperature is 275-285 Degrees F at 264 PSI. Easily fabricated by machining, drilling, and sawing with a low likelihood of cracking or chipping. Solvent resistance is poor but polycarbonate is easily bonded. Prolonged exposure to solvents with the material under stress will result in crazing and cracking. |

Cast Acrylic has unusual optical clarity, excellent light transmission and outstanding weatherability. It is unaffected by sunlight, resists aging and maintains good stability under variable conditions of heat, cold, moisture and other exposure, it will not warp, crack, craze or corrode. Cast acrylic may be preferred for some industrial and commercial applications because it is more optically perfect than molded or extruded types of acrylic products. It provides high tensile strength and good resistance to heat distortion. This is the best quality clear rod available for machining or cementing and will fabricate like wood, metal, or other plastics, with standard equipment. Half the weight of comparable glass, Cast Acrylic has good shatter resistance and excellent durability. |

The holidays are here, that means sleding, tubing, skiing, building snow men, and snowball fights with frineds and family. Many people forget to wear sunscreen this time of year because it's not the hot days of summer. But going without sunscreen in a snow covered environment is in many ways worse than no protection in the mid summer sun.
The fact is that snow reflects light in a blinding fashion. If you've ever walked through snow and had to shade your eyes from the glare of the snow then you know what I mean. That light is also hitting your unprotected skin and causing sun damage. The glare from the snow is usually many more times magnifined then the sun is on it's own. This means the damage to your skin could be greater in the winter than in the summer.
Using sun protection in the winter is for this reason very important. Using water proof sun protection like Mineral Makeup is a great alternative for winter use. Because the natural minerals in the makeup are water resistant and "bond" to the skin they won't wash away, smear or "melt" when you sweat or when rain or snow lands on your face. In fact, mineral makeup is so effective that it takes some amount of soap to really remove mineral makeup. Water alone won't remove it completely.
The two primary ingredients in mineral makeup - Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are natural full spectrum UV sun blockers which gives you complete coverage from the damaging rays of the sun glaring off the snow. Titanium Dioxide is also the second most reflective mineral in the world, next only to diamond. This reflective quality gives your face a radiant "glow" that many faithful mineral makeup fans rave about.
Mineral Makeup also helps fight acne by keeping bacteria feeding moisture out of the pores. The minerals are also non organic, which further prevents them feeding bacteria. And not to worry about the minerals clogging pores. They are so finely ground that they are smaller than the pores on your face, in fact they come in a powder form that you simply dust on your face for a light natural coverage. Because the minerals are in powder form they blend seamlessly into the skin for a very natural look.
If you're health conscious then you will love mineral makeup because it is all natural with no dyes, chemicals, or preservatives. These qualites make mineral makeup one of your best sun fighting winter friends.

Solar Tubes – You Get More than Just Natural Light
Solar tubes are some of the brightest energy-saving ideas that have hit mainstream market. Also referred to as tubular skylights or sunscoops, these tubular-shaped skylights essentially collect and channel natural light into home and building interiors. Think light bulbs or daylights without the electricity. However, unlike the typical skylights being sold in home improvement stores, these tubes are specially designed to evenly distribute sunlight inside homes and buildings. With an even distribution of sunlight, no particular area inside your home will be overexposed to sunlight, thus you can avoid having faded carpets or furnishings. And since they are solar powered, these skylight tubes can save you money in the long run.
Good solar tubes are typically made from acrylic resin. This material provides the roof-mounted portion of the tubes, called domes, with better clarity. In effect, it maximizes the amount of sunlight that gets into home or building interiors. These tube shaped skylights are designed to have high level of resistance against extreme weather conditions and to withstand the impact of objects that might hit their domes. On top of the high quality acrylic resin used in making skylight tubes, a layer of reflective aluminum is also added on the tube itself. This enables the device to direct sunlight better than ordinary skylights. Plus, a diffuser lens that comes with every kit of tube-shaped skylight can be installed on the ceiling and help distribute light throughout the home or building.
Indeed, solar tubes are intended to function just like conventional skylights, only without the usual drawbacks. For one, the roof-mounted domes of this type of solar lights are usually added with UV inhibitors that can prevent excessive ultraviolet radiation from getting inside your home or building. Also, solar tubes are designed to lessen the heat that gets into the tube and eventually into the room. Therefore, even if you use natural sunlight to brighten up your home or building interiors, you do not need to turn on the air conditioner. And since the whole tube is lined with a highly reflective coating, sunlight can be efficiently collected and channeled from early in the morning till late in the afternoon. As a result, you save even more on your electricity.
The best part about solar tubes is the fact that they can be easily installed. All you need to do is make a hole on the roof. This is where you will set up the skylight. Next, make another hole on the ceiling where you will mount the diffuser. You will link the skylight and the diffuser by inserting the tube or shaft. While the installation procedure looks straightforward, you need some DIY experience if you want your tube-shaped skylight to be installed properly.
Solar tubes can be set up in almost all types of roofing material, from asphalt shingles and concrete to metal and ceramic tiles. This type of skylight comes in 10- or 13-inch tubes. If you want to save more on your electricity bills and help save the environment without sacrificing good interior lighting, solar tubes are definitely a wise choice.

Is it safe to paint with water based acrylic craft paint?
I am 36 weeks pregnant and have small projects I want to complete for the nursery before the baby comes. These projects involve using water based acrylic craft paint. These are the kind that comes in small tubes at any craft store in a large variety of colors. I know that you should avoid latex paint, but I am not sure about craft paint. Are these safe to use while pregnant?
Acrylic paints are very similar to latex based, but they emit quite a bit less odour than the house paint variety. I would say that it'd be fine as long as you use them in a well ventilated area.
You'll want to make sure all your colours are marked NON-Toxic. Most craft paints are, but check, each should be labelled as such. Some artist acrylics contain pigments that are NOT SAFE during pregnancy (or really, not at all if skin contact occurs) such as Cadmium, Cobalt and Lead. Again, this isn't common in Craft Quality paints, but make sure you see the AP Non-Toxic label on each tube.
I should note, any paint that says Hue and is marked Non-Toxic is also fine. Hue means the pigment used is a close colour replica of the original, but a safe and/or less expensive version. For example: Cadmium Yellow Hue would contain no actual Cadmium, therefore it should still have a non-toxic label. I just wanted to add that in case someone reads this and panics
The key is in the non-toxic label, if you've got that, you're fine. Paints that contain pigments with health risks should always be labelled as such.
If you're still unsure, contact your doctor and ask.
Good Luck!
