Cast Iron and Aluminum Repair Services

The economy here in the United States and abroad is still suffering pretty bad.  It is October of 2010 and I still don't see anything changing.  I started to wonder what I could do to save money and/or cut costs in order to make it through this downed economy.   One of the main things that separate me from my grandparents is disposable items.  They made it through the depression in the 30's and my parents talk about it all the time, when they were young nothing was thrown away.

Everything was used and re-used and re-used until it could not be used anymore.  This concept for some reason has completely changed over the last 30 years.  We have become a nation of consumers using goods that are tossed away after one cycle.  Everything from TV's to toys are made from China and done so with the idea behind it that they will be thrown away instead of fixed.  Well part of this reason is because technology moves so fast that most of these items are outdated within 6 to 12 months.  So the question then becomes what are some items that are not outdated but can still be repaired instead of thrown away.  Fishing boats, fences, roofs, non-mechanical tools, gardening tools, engine blocks and other car parts are just a few items that you will find being used today that were created many decades ago.

Now we are starting to talk about saving some money.  If I could repair the fence in my backyard instead of replacing it like my wife wants to do I can spend that money on more important things like food and clothing.  So, the question then begs to ask, how can I fix my fence without hiring someone to do it.  The labor alone will make me want to just go get another fence.  This does not help our locate economy as the fence was more than likely made somewhere other than the United States.

Well I could hire a local repair company to come and fix my fence because that would help the local economy but we are back to my whole dilemma, I'm broke.  So, here we are at the million dollar question.  If I could repair re-usable items instead of tossing them out and buying new or hiring someone else to do it then I would be able to save money and spend it on items of my choice.  I did a few searches online and it hit me.  The common element to most of the items we could repair is metal.  Everything I listed above was crafted out of cast iron , steel or aluminum.  I could even go find and repair cast iron cookware at rummage sale instead of buying new and thus saving myself money.  Radiators and stoves can also be purchased at a very low cost if they need to be repaired.  I even started thinking that I could create a business myself out of repairing these items, but I will save that for another blog.

I started by doing a few Google searches for cast iron repair, steel repair and aluminum repair and I found most of the sites explaining how to do this required costly equipment and skills in welding.  Guess what, I don't have either one of these two items.  I started to get frustrated but then I found Bradshaw Consulting, Inc., http://www.bradshawconsulting.com.  This company has a line of products that can be used to repair virtually any metal with no welding.  All you need is a torch and to clean the surface that needs to be repaired.

Cast iron can be repaired by a product called Castaloy, http://www.castaloy.com .  Steel can be repaired with a product called Steelaloy, http://www.steelaloy.com.  Aluminum, my favorite, can be repaired with Alumaloy which can be found at http://www.alumaloy.org .  Now the Castaloy and the Steelaloy require a flux which is an acid used to clean the surface of the metal but it comes free with any medium size order.

Has anyone ever used aluminum"brazing rod" that's used with a propane torch. What kind and how did it work?

This aluminum rod is actually brazing rod for aluminum. It's not welding from what I can tell. I would like to repair some large aluminum truck boxes that have some stress cracks and alot
of bolt holes. Some common names of aluminum rod are Alumaloy, Dura fix, HTS-2000, Muggy weld,& Alladin to name a few. Would like to know how it works and which kind is better?

I bought some "Alumaloy" at the Dixie Classic Fair and they work well for thin material but you can't get thicker material hot enough to do any good without melting a big hole in it. Since you have truck boxes with stress cracks the only solution for you is Heliarc Welding, sorry.
