Everywhere on the Internet images are used. Some use them to make an article more attractive and others to advertise on a web page. No matter how you use pictures it is important to decrease their size, as this will speed up your load time.
Most people do not about tricks on how to reduce the size of an image. Most of these tricks are easily applied and will save you a lot of bandwidth and load time once you get used to them.
Ways to Decrease the Size of Pictures
First Step
Download a photo editing software like Photoshop or Gimp. Both of them are excellent for image editing while the latter is free. After having installed one of the applications, load an image, of which you want to decrease the size, into the program.
Second Step
In Gimp you can just click on Image -> Scale Image to reduce the height and width of a photo. Bigger an image (in terms of height and width) the larger the size of the picture. It is generally wise to choose a maximum width of around 500 pixels as the content section of web sites is normally around that size too.
Third Step
Afterwards click on File -> Save As to save your file. When saving, Gimp let's you make the image size even smaller by letting you choose what type of quality the picture should be in. So adjust the quality to fit your needs
Fourth Step
Download software like Pngcrush, Jpegcrop or Jpegtran. The first one will reduce the size of PNG files, while the other too should be used on JPGs. Use the software, load a picture into it, and it will automatically reduce the size of the photo.

Vector vs. Bitmap
Some might speculate why vector art is now favored by many graphic artists. Several are accustomed to using bitmap images so they find it strange while many switch to using vector art now. The rationale is straightforward. Vector images are considerably better relative with bitmap images, in terms of scalability and quality.
Bitmap images are composed of just tiny squares, termed as pixels. When pixels are combined, these tiny squares can result to certain images that appear on the computer’s monitor.
