Bottom Hose

To conserve the municipal water used on our flowers, shrubs, and tomato plants, we installed an easy-to-manipulate 150-gallon plastic farm-type stock-watering tank underneath our back deck where it became a hidden rain barrel. We drew the spout-collected rain water from the tank with a small portable electric sump-pump having a garden hose attached to its outlet. During the manual watering of our plants, we controlled the flow with an adjustable nozzle at the outer end of the hose.

Items used

  1. one 150-gallon plastic stock-watering tank with a drain plug, 35"H x 39"W x 58"L (acquired from a discount farm-supply hardware store)
  2. one portable 110-VAC submersible sump-pump, flat-bottom floor-type with hose attachment, 1/4-to-1/3-hp, or equivalent
  3. four inexpensive wooden slats, 1" x 2" x 40"
  4. one roll of fine-mesh aluminum window screen, 64"x44" or larger
  5. eight 1½"-long speed screws and a compatible screwdriver
  6. small box of 1/4" staples and small hammer, or equivalents
  7. one garden hose 5/8" by 50', or as needed with adjustable nozzle
  8. one electrical extension cord (length needed to reach an outlet)
  9. one 110-VAC outdoor electrical outlet (switch-controlled if possible)
  10. one rain-gutter spout from the house rooftop

Assembly

  1. Attach the wooden slats across the top narrow width of the tank by screwing them down to the rim.
  2. Place the sump-pump with attached hose on the floor of the tank at the desired location. Let its electrical cord and attached garden hose hang out over the rim.
  3. Spread the screen over the slats atop the tank to cover it entirely. Staple the screen down to the slats. Let the screen portion above the pump and its cord and hose remain as a loose flap in case the pump must be serviced or removed.
  4. Tighten the drain plug.
  5. Place the tank close to the chosen gutter spout. If possible, hide it behind or under a deck or bush, or camouflage it as desired.
  6. Route the end of the gutter spout to the top of the tank above the screen so that the tank will collect the rain water.
  7. Extend the extension cord to the power supply.

Water collection

The experts say a one-inch rain will yield a total of 600-gallons of water from a 1000-square-foot home catchment area. Our home is slightly over 1000-square-feet. Thus, our tank filled to overflow from one spout during the first rain. The overflow drained away from the house via a sloped terrace.

We had no trouble drawing water from the tank all summer since we had adequate rainfall this year. A larger tank would have filled just as easily. The tank's fine-screen covering kept it and its collected water free of excess debris, which consisted of wind-blown grass, leaves, and miscellaneous material coming from the screen-covered roof gutters.

Two advantages

Two major advantages came with harvesting rooftop water in this manner. First, the tank was not an eyesore because it was hidden. Our deck is surrounded with shrubs.

Second, the sump-pump provided adequate water pressure at all times, even when the water level in the tank got low. In fact, with our tank-and-pump arrangement, we could have run multiple sprinklers for the lawn, too. We might try that next summer although it might require a slightly different pump.

The Air Hose Reel And The Safe Auto Shop

It is almost impossible today to find an auto shop or mechanical shop today that does not have an air compressor that runs various air tools and accessories. If a shop has an air compressor, it will have air hoses running all over the place to run air tools, grease guns, inflate tires and perform various other tasks. In order to keep your shop floor safe and clutter free, an air hose reel is the easiest and most widely used method for storing and using air hoses. Hose reels are also used for air, water, gardens, potable water, cold water, hot water, oxy-acetylene as well as grease and oil pumping systems. With this many different applications, a shop can quickly become a tangle of different colored hoses. Besides hurting productivity and looking sloppy, loose hoses on the shop floor are a safety hazard. Today, most professional auto shops have several air hose reels mounted on the walls that will automatically retract and store air hoses. There are basically three different versions of the air hose reel.

The most common type of air hose reel is the open faced self retracting type. This type of air hose reel is generally constructed with heavy gauge steel and corrosion resistant components to withstand the demanding environment of the modern auto shop. Auto rewind is also a standard feature and is highly recommended by Red Hill Supply. A good air hose reel also will have the ability to be mounted on the wall, ceiling or even on a service truck. Some other features to look for is: dual axle support (This is important to withstand vehicle vibration if the air hose reel will be mounted on a service truck. ),Weep holes in the drum. (Weep holes allow moisture to drain from the drum and reduce rusting.) and heavy gauge steel.

The closed face air hose reel is becoming much more popular and popping up in more and more high end auto shops. A closed face air hose reel has several advantages over its open faced cousin. First, the air hose is completely protected when it is fully retracted in the case. This protects the hose from harsh weather conditions and other hazards that can damage and ruin a hose. Another common feature is the ability to wind the hose back and forth and insure the hose is wound back up levelly. This insures the air hose is always retracted equally across the drum. Also, the outer casing is usually made of industrial grade polypropylene that is resistant to ultraviolet light. This makes the air hose reel dent resistant and impervious to corrosion.

Mainly the manual air hose reel is relegated to the garage and home mechanic. This type of air hose reel has to cranked with a lever in order to retract the hose back onto the reel. They typically are of cheaper construction and not as durable as the other types of reels. However, if you are looking for a low cost air hose reel for your garage, a manual air hose reel will be just fine and provide you with years of service.

How can I patch a power steering low pressure hose to regain steering to get it in for replacement.?

My power steering fluid sprung a leak. It had turned to much overnight in -8 degree weather and split the low pressure hose at the bottom of the reservoir after starting my 1993 Ford aerostar this morning. What can I use to patch the leak long enough to drive it in for replacement of the hose?
It had turned to mush overnight

Steve-

Depending on where the leak is located you can to the following.

Cut the hose and remove the split section. Then replace the section using a piece of steel or copper line and a pair of hose clamps.

You are going to need enough hose at either end of the splice to be able to clamp the metal line shut to prevent leaking.

Then you are going to need to add power steering fluid to the reservior.

After you have the fluid at the correct level you need to start the engine and let it come up to operating temprature so everything is warm. Then you will need to turn your wheel lock to lock slowly so the pump can purge out any air in the lines. You will need to turn the wheel several times. Then shut the engine off and check the fluid level and add as necessary.

Now this is only a temporary fix, and you will need to hit the shop to get the hose replaced. But I can tell you this. Just purchase the hose yourself from either the Dealership Parts House or your local parts store. If you can patch the hose, its not much more challenging to just replace it yourself.

Once you have done the patch job, you will see that the actual replacement of this part is not that much more involved. This is a very basic replacement process. I have done replacements like this myself several times, and twice on my parents Aerostar.

Just be sure that you hit Sears and get a set of Tubing Wrenches. Just ask the tool guy there and he will get you pointed in the right direction. These are a great set of wrenches for other jobs around the house. They are designed to keep you from stripping the jam nuts on the steel lines. Open End wrenches only grab two points on the nut, and have a tendancy to round off the hex points.

Good luck and I hope I helped you out!

Blue Hose defeat Lady Bucs in two-game series
Among all the sporting events that have been happening on campus the softball team had a showing with a two-game series against the Presbyterian College Blue Hose Wednesday at Cardinal Park. ETSU would have liked to win this series to build confidence for the next series scheduled against Lipscomb and Belmont.
