Half way through a training course recently on the use of brushcutters or strimmers, the candidate came back into the workshop distressed because her hand was tingling through using the machine. I immediately diagnosed the problem as Hand-arm vibration.
What is hand-arm vibration?
Hand-arm vibration is transmitted from a work activity into someone's hands and arms. This occurs when:

When is hand-arm vibration hazardous?
Regular and frequent exposure to hand-arm vibration can lead to permanent ill health. This is most likely if contact with a vibrating tool or workpiece is a regular part of someone's job. Occasional or low-level exposure is unlikely to cause ill health.
What health effects does vibration cause?
Hand-arm vibration can cause a range of conditions called hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The best known is vibration white finger (VWF), but vibration also links to specific diseases such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
For some people symptoms appear after only a few months of exposure but for others it may take years. The symptoms are likely to get worse with repeated exposure and can lead to permanent damage and disfigurement. They can severely limit the jobs that someone is able to do, as well as affect family and social activities.
The symptoms include any combination of:
tingling and numbness in the fingers;
not being able to feel things properly;
loss of strength in the hands; and/or
fingers going white (blanching) and becoming red and painful on recovery (particularly in the cold and wet, and probably only in the tips at first).
The effects of these symptoms on people include:
pain, distress and disturbed sleep; inability to do fine work (eg assembling small components) or everyday tasks (eg fastening buttons); reduced ability to work in cold or damp conditions (ie most outdoor construction work), which is likely to trigger a painful finger blanching attack; and
reduced grip strength, which might affect the ability to work safely.
Who might be affected?
Tradesmen, Construction workers, Amenity workers, who work with hand-held or hand-guided power-tools and machines, such as:
Concrete breakers, pokers and compactors; sanders, grinders and disc cutters; hammer drills; chipping hammers; chainsaws; brushcutters or strimmers; and scabblers or needle guns.
As for my candidate on the brushcutter, I stressed that she was only on a training course, and had limited use of the machine on that day, that possibly a career in Amenity work may not be suitable for her. For our own safety as a company, we filled in an incident report that she had suffered tingling on using the machine, and our recommendations, which she signed. So you can see even from this experience, the significance it has to the person using the machines, but also on employers themselves who may be liable even 40 years later.
I have come across many people in the industry who are totally oblivious as to the cause of this Hand-Arm vibration, and some I have talked to who use the machines constantly say that they thought the problems they were suffering were down to athritis or some other ailment. As stated above, the effects over long term are significant.

How do you repair heavily damaged 100+ yearold plaster directly on brick walls?
I've heard of using acid.. but the floors are wood. I need to do this myself, so I can't hire anyone. I've tried chipping away at it with a chisel and hammer, and was able to remove some large chunks.. but most of it wouldn't budge that way. And its so dusty.. the bricks flake off. The bricks are crumbly and old. This house was built in 1895, its a corner rowhome.
Unfortunately there is no exact answer. You need to be wearing a respirator due to the presence of possible carcinogens and other nasties. Use dropclothes to protect other rooms, just do a small section at a time. You could use a small brick hammer (such as one made by Estwing) to loosen the material. All that you do with the brick hammer is tap tap tap, using the weight of the hammer as force and the fulcrum is your wrist. Then remove the chunks. Plus there is another thing: what do we do once the older plaster is down? What are we putting back up? Are we re-plastering or putting up drywall with insulation?
A tool that would remove the plaster is a floor scraper, but they are very tough. Once you start using that floor scraper the stuff is going to come off in buckets. So do we insulate and drywall after this?
