Here are some more information for Climbing Gaffs:

Cheap tree climbing spikes are a necessary tool to launch yourself into the tree climbing business. Whether you are using them to make a living, or for hunting, they are a tool that needs to be researched carefully. What makes them cheap should be the price you paid for them, not how they are made.
Good used climbing spikes should have comfortable pads that are well made and not worn to the point of having holes or torn stitches. Another thing to look for is whether they are adjustable. Just about all newer ones are but there are a few old style non-adjustable ones still around. Be careful not to confuse pole-climbing spikes with tree climbing spikes. The gaffs on pole climbers are shorter and can cause you to cut out or fall when using them on trees with thick bark. Some models have replaceable gaffs and can be used either way. You just have to switch to the longer style gaffs when climbing certain trees.
Check the straps for wear and good operation of the buckles. Some attach with split rings. These rings should be inspected for cracks or separation. They are easily replaced, so don't turn down an otherwise good pair of climbers because of them. The straps and pads can be replaced easily, but they can cost as much or more than you paid for the tree climbers.
If you are buying new climbing spikes what will make them cheaper is the way they are made. The least expensive will have plastic pads instead of leather. The gaffs will not be replaceable and their rings will most likely be the split type. The straps will be some type of compound material with inexpensive buckles.
Cheap tree climbing spikes can be well made, they just won't have as many features as the more expensive ones. If you will be using these for hunting than you should consider hand wood carving tools to make your tree stand comfortable.

What Tree Climbing Spikes/Spurs/Gaffs should i get?
What manufacturer do you recommend and why do you recommend it?
What type you get is irrelevant. The question is: who is going to teach you how to use them? It's not as easy as it looks in that video you are so fascinated with. Believe me, I climbed poles during my electrical training and there are few trained and experienced people who can climb as quickly as that guy did. Also realize that he was on a training pole -- those are so punctured from hundreds of climbs that they are like balsa wood -- spongy and easy to drive the spikes into. Trying to climb a thicky barked hardwood tree or a real roadside utility pole full of staples and nails is a whole different ball game. Besides the spikes and rigid soled boots (which are all going to run you several hundred dollars) you need a safety harness, good gloves and a hard hat. But most of all, you need instruction and supervised experience. I've seen rookies slide down a pole and end up full of splinters -- not a pretty site.
If you are just looking to climb a tree, do it with muscle power, a pair of tight leather work gloves and a good pair of athletic shoes, like most people do. Leave the spiking rigs to the pros.
Taking on trees: Forestry Days brings competitors from Rockies, Northwest
Niki Kropp seemed to zip 30 feet up the pole faster than some folks might skip over a log.Kropp, a member of the Flathead Valley Community College Logger Sports team, wore logger gaffs strapped to her high-top boots and a T-shirt that quoted track star Steve Prefontaine: “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.”
