Solar power is the most pervasive power source on the planet. In fact, the sun emits so much radiation that every day the earth receives enough terawatts of power to meet all of our energy needs for more than a year. With this immense power supply literally hovering over our heads each day, why is the switch to solar such a slow process?
To better understand the challenges involved in harnessing solar power, it is helpful to take a look at just how this power is produced. Photovoltaic power is the term for creating electricity using the photoelectric effect. As the word would indicate, the photoelectric effect creates electric power from light. The way that it does so is little short of amazing. Every element known to us consists of a nucleus with electrons orbiting it. The electrons orbit the nucleus as closely as physically possible according to the rules of quantum mechanics. When light shines on an element, it is a stream of radiation that actually interacts with that substance on a subatomic level. Some of the energy from that light is absorbed by the electrons in each atom, which causes them to gain energy.
Electrons with more energy are able to orbit further away from their respective nuclei than they could before. If an electron gains enough energy, it can break free from its parent atom entirely, creating an ionized atom. This actually happens with all substances, from hydrogen all the way through to the radioactive elements such as plutonium. The catch (and it is a big one) is that once the atom loses the electron, we need to be able to grab it and create a current with it. Electrical current is exactly the same concept as an ocean or river current: it is a flow of electrons.
The ability to harness the freed electrons was the first barrier to overcome in our pursuit of solar power. Gaseous elements like hydrogen have very few electrons, and those electrons require a lot of energy to free from their host atoms. What's more, the element itself is a poor conductor of electrical current, so transmitting the electricity anywhere would be like trying to ride a bike with square tires.
On the flip side, large elements such as uranium or plutonium are very loose with their electrons, and they share the conductive properties of metals. However, they are extremely unstable, and as they break down they emit neutrons and radiation across a broad spectrum of the electromagnetic spectrum, including harmful gamma rays. The other problem is that they conduct electricity just as well as most other metals, such as the copper commonly used in wiring, which creates problems getting the electricity to actually move to the safe wiring. So while they can create electricity, the current they emitted would be like a river contaminated with toxic waste, hardly an ideal fit.
A happy medium can be found in the semi-conductive materials, the most abundant of which is silicon. These materials can be shaped to allow the electrons to move through the semi conductive material to a wiring array on the back side of it, which neatly solves the problem of how to turn the photovoltaic effect into something we can usefully harness.
