Do you need to ware 100% cotton to weld?
Im Taking welding classes and trying to figure out if i need to buy New Jeans. Its nearly impossible for me to find 100% cotton Jeans that will fit me. Not only am i considered Plus sized, Im also tall. So if i can get away with 98% cotton Jeans that would be wonderful.
I weld in my trades. I do it all, millwright, iron-worker, fabricator , mechanic.. etc to name a few.
Carharts are expensive but will last for years. If you go to a "trades store" you can buy FR clothing (fire resistant) but unless you are in a mill or foundry, that is really overkill. Any weld shop has 'greens". A light wieght jacket (green in color) that are fire resistant (until washed). (Your school may supply them, so wait and see before buying any special stuff) Any heavy flannel shirt is enough for most weld jobs. Yes, I have caught fire before, but it is more of a laughing matter than anything.. I have never been hurt badly. You 'will' get burned no matter what you do. With time, you will just squint, and wait till it stops burning.. no biggy, we all have horor stories about big "berries" that burn the crap out of us.. it goes with the job.
Your main concern is your shoes! Most bad burns happen to the feet. All of the molten "lava" falls DOWNWARD. If you have cheap shoes, or nylon tounge shoes... you will regret it. Leather, laceless boots are best. If you go with something with laces.... buy 10 spare pairs, they burn up every day.
Gloves are important while learning. You WILL put your hand down on things you just welded! I will gaurantee you that. We all have done it and I STILL DO SOMETIMES. Good gloves are a must at first.
So , don't freak out on jeans. I love carharts , I have over 100 pair. At $45 to $50 a pair, quite an investment. They are the best, go with DARK COLORS. Welding is dirty and nasty. If you can find BLACK PANTS, buy them. That way , when they are clean.... THEY LOOK CLEAN. haha
