How to calculate wall thickness to prevent cylinder crushing?
I have to design a torch. It is basically a long cylinder. It has to be able to withstand someone standing on it and the tube crushing.
Is there a formula i could use to calculate the necessary wall thickness?
I have found one equation, shear stress = (Shear Force)*(Q - statical moment of area- )/(I*t)
I have no clue what the t stands for or what the Q value is for a hollow cylinder, anyone know any of this perhaps?
That's a tricky question. There are several ways a cylinder can fail, and shear is one of them, but usually the least likely. The most likely failure depends on the ratios of length to diameter to wall thickness.
However, something like a torch is usually designed by rules of thumb rather than a lot of stress analysis. Most likely you are going to make it out of some standard size metal tubing or pipe. Most common sizes of tubing and pipe are designed to withstand a certain minimum pressure and they have thick enough walls that they are not likely to be crushed by someone stepping on them. Try it.
If your cylinder is very long relative to its diameter, it could be bent by someone stepping on it. If you select a diameter of tube that is bigger than one-twentieth of the length of the tube, you shouldn't have to worry about that either.
