How to Prep for a Culinary Arts Career
Culinary arts careers cover different aspects of the preparation and creation of a wide variety of foods and beverages. The basics of the career can include prep work and cooking along with cleaning utensils, surface areas, and cooking machines. Further up the chain, head chefs and executive chefs originate menus and dishes while instructing others around them how to create their delicacies.
A Culinary Career Taster
As a taster, you could be called upon to stand and be active for long hours. The work is often part-time and during the times when most other people are off work, which means that holidays and weekend work can be common.
Becoming a Top Chef
The benefits of reaching the pinnacle of this industry can be fame and rubbing elbows with other famous people. Many top chefs have gotten shows on television like Rachel Ray or Gordon Ramsay in Hell's Kitchen. Top chef notoriety can generate a lot of money, but this tends to be the exception than the norm. The more immediate benefits for most individuals are the satisfaction of preparing and cooking quality food.
Beefing Up Your Education
An associate's or bachelor's degree in the culinary arts can help build your career's foundation, although on-the-job training can be enough to start working in a food preparation job. Finding a chef to mentor you can be a tremendous advantage; a number of famous chefs such as Mario Batali do just that. The greater your aspirations, the more education you may want to consider. To be a head chef or restaurateur often calls for quite a bit of business sense, so a bachelor's degree in business or even an MBA can be a boon to your long-term success. Of course, nothing beats the street smarts of knowing how to make connections with rich culinary aficionados to help back your restaurant ventures--just ask chef Tom Colicchio.
Whatever your path to culinary success, you'll want to learn the ropes and be absolutely passionate about cooking great food.

Getting the weight of 45 degree steel elbow?
Hi! Can anyone tell me how to get the weight of a 45 degree steel elbow base on the given values that describes the elbow.
The given values are--
Outside Diameter: 33.3375 mm
radius: 38.1mm
center to end: 22.225 mm
Nominal size is: 25 mm
thanks
Here is my estimated weight...
I took the approach of using the volumes of two torroids, an outer torroid and an inner torroid. The difference in the volumes represents a hollowed-out torroid having a wall thickness of the fitting. I then took 1/8 of the volume since a 45 degree fitting is 1/8th of a complete circle. I then researched the density of steel and applied the density of 316L stainless steel. (The dimensions given appear similar to a stainless steel 1" 45 degree elbow fitting.)
The volume of a torroid is given on the Mathematica website
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Torus.html
http://mathworld.wolfram.com/images/eps-gif/TorusDimensions_900.gif
Th volume of a torroid is:
V = 1/4 π² (R+r) (R-r)²
I determined the wall thickness as the outside diameter (33.3375 mm) minus the nominal size (25 mm). This results in a wall thickness of (8.3375 mm / 2) or 4.16875 mm
Compute outer torroid Volume
Determine outer torroid radiuses
R = outside diameter
R = 38.1 mm
r = radius - outside diameter
r = 38.1 mm - 33.3375 mm = 4.7625 mm
Determine volume of outer torroid
V = 1/4π²(R+r)(R-r)²
V = 1/4π²(38.1 mm + 4.7625 mm)(38.1 mm - 4.7625 mm)²
V = 117539 mm³
Compute inner torroid Volume
Determine inner torroid radiuses
R = outside diameter - wall thickness
R = 38.1 mm - 4.16875 mm = 33.93125 mm
r = radius - outside diameter + wall thickness
r = 38.1 mm - 33.3375 mm + 4.16875 mm = 8.93125 mm
Determine volume of inner torroid
V = 1/4π²(R+r)(R-r)²
V = 1/4π²(33.93125 mm + 8.93125 mm)(33.93125 mm - 8.93125 mm)²
V = 66099 mm³
The hollowed-out torroid volume is the Outer Volume - Inner Volume
V = 117539 mm³ - 66099 mm³
V = 51440 mm³
A 45 degree toroid = 360 deg / 8 = 45
V = 51440 mm³ / 8
V = 6430 mm³
V = 6.443 cm³
316L stainless has a density of 7.80 g/cm³
http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2004/KarenSutherland.shtml
6.443 cm³ x 7.80 g/cm³ = 50.154 g
Which is just about 1.8 ounces in weight
