What type of lens do I need?
I need to take professional quality photos of close up small objects on a regular basis and my camera is just not cutting it anymore. In my job I need to take photos of tiny screws and bolts and such. Looking into a digital SLR since I use these photos for website design. I heard the term macro lens but what exactly is that? what is the range or specs I need to look for in a lens for what i need?
A true macro lens traditionally was a prime lense ( single focal length ) that provides a 1:1 ( life size ) magnification ratio of the subject and above and up to around 22:1 ( larger than life ) according to Nikon.
There are also the zoom 'macro' lenses. These will typically only work when you are zoomed in to a certain focal range on the lense, typically the extremity of its zoom ability. This ability to swap is toggled by a switch that lets the lense alternate modes.
Keep in mind the crop factor and magnification effect you will get if you choose a reduced frame camera body such as the Eos Rebel series or the Nikon D40 versus a full frame.
I would imagine that around 70mm -100mm would be nice since 50mm feels kind of cramped at times .
