How do you make a heavy-duty papier mache?
I'm wanting to make a shell for a costume, which will be the size of a large wok. I'd like for it to be somewhat hard, as I'll be travelling with it.
You should shape the shell out of chicken wire (be sure to crimp the ends) but instead of doing one wire mesh, make the top and bottom (inside of shell and out) or else the thing will be real heavy.
For the spacer between the outer shell and inner shell, use balsa wood and make your straps attach to the balsa wood that is stapled to the chicken wire.
After you have made the shell to look right, you will need some newspaper and your mache milk (the paste) to dip it into.
Spread the newspaper across the whole one side... let dry before you do the other side then do the edge that meets last.
The newspaper will not let the drip to seep through where other paper does.
Once you have the form, you should use a final cover of a tougher paper as that will give you the real texture and it will glue to the paper just fine.
the strength and durability is more based on the rigidity of the chicken wire frame... if you have used enough spacers from outer shell and inner shell, you will only need to worry about the meeting edge.
To go back to the meeting edge, try using an old rubber hose to wrap the outer to inner as that will provide structure and support when you drop it on your way to the car.
