If you are having problems with your pool filter passing dirt and don't know where to start, this article is meant to help you diagnose the problem correctly. The filter referred to is a de filter but can be applied to sand and cartridge.
Many people don't know where to begin when trying to find the reason their filter is passing dirt back into the pool. The first thing that needs to be done is for the backwash valve to be inspected. This is rarely the cause of dirt returning to the pool but is the easiest step in looking for the problem. If it is a push pull valve the plunger needs to be removed. If need be a diagram should be referred to, loosen the nut or nuts and pull the shaft up out of the housing. Inspect the two O rings pay particular attention to the top O ring. The top ring causes the dirt to return to the pool. When there is a problem with the bottom ring the backwash will leak water out the drain. This causes the pool to loose water. When checking the O rings look for wear, nicks or cracks. If you find the top O ring to be the problem then replace and lube with a silicone type grease. If a petroleum lube is used the rubber rings will swell. Tip, replace both O rings to prevent any other problems from occurring.
If the backwash valve is not the problem then the filter itself should be dismantled. First inspect the manifold, this is the plastic unit that the grids are placed. Look for any cracks or the manifold itself being distorted. This can be caused from excessive heat, when the manifold becomes distorted the shape of it changes and it is very easy for dirt to pass. If the manifold seems OK then clean and inspect the grids. One of the most common spots to wear is the top of the grid. A tube runs through the middle of the grid and at the top it forms a circle. Many times a small hole will be present. This can be the cause of the dirt passing into the pool. If there are not any holes in the top of the grids then inspect the rest of the surface of the grids. Look for holes or rips, if found replace the grid.
In conclusion taking this project one step at a time will help lead to a successful job. Check the backwash valve then inspect the manifold and grids. This should solve any problems that you are having with the pool filter.

The amazing thing is it will fit in your existing return air grille like a 1” filter does recessing into your return air opening. So, there isn’t a need for a filter housing or any retrofitting. The only requirement is that your return opening is deep enough for the filter to recess into it. If your return air isn’t deep enough there is a 2” Practical Pleat. Why won't the water dispenser stop leaking from the filter housing on my frigidaire refrigerator?
I've finally fixed the water pressure problem by replacing the self tapping valve with a normal valve, but water still leaks from the filter housing when the dispenser is activated. So basically anytime I fill a glass with water or water is periodically filled into the ice dispenser, a good bit leaks from the side of the filter into the fridge. I couldn't possibly put any more teflon tape on it and the seal seems tight. What's wrong? Its a Pure Source brand filtration system.
If the seal is in good shape the plastic filter housing is most likely cracked. Shut off your water, take the filter housing off and hold it up to a light. You may find it has a small crack in it. You can also fill it with water and wipe it dry on the sides and look for water seeping out the sides.
