With the rising prices of gasoline and other conventional fuels, Oxyhydrogen is widely gaining acceptance as a great alternate fuel which is capable of fulfilling human energy needs for many years to come. Scientists have produced very encouraging results for experiments done to evaluate this alternative for energy generation. Dr. William A. Rhodes invented the Oxyhydrogen flame in 1997.
Oxyhydrogen consists of Hydrogen and Oxygen in a 2:1 molar ratio. Although it has the same constituents and the same ratio of constituents as water, it is different than water. Unlike water, which is liquid, this is a gaseous mixture. When ignited, this mixture of gases gets converted to vapor and leads to emission of energy. The amount of heat energy emitted is independent of combustion mode. The process to generate this fuel is known as Water Electrolysis. This process is often also used in industries for melding glass and metals.
The most common application of this alternate fuel is to for torches to process refractory materials and for welding purpose. The flame must be used at short distances from the torch tip otherwise it will not produce the desired heating effect. Although it was used in lamps for lighting purpose few years back, it has now been replaced by electrical lamps in favor of safety. When used in cars, this fuel is mixed with gasoline and helps increase mileage. However, it is not possible to run cars on Oxyhydrogen itself. Gasoline is still required and this fuel simply serves as a supplement to improve mileage.
Yull Brown is credited with the invention of the electrolyzer used to store this gaseous mixture. Therefore, this Oxyhydrogen is often known as "Brown's Gas". Another company, Hydrogen Technology Applications (HTA), trademarked this fuel under the name Aquygen. One of the founders of HTA, Dennis Klein, holds a patent for an alternate electrolyzer design.
One of the biggest drawbacks of this fuel is that it is explosive and requires careful handling. It is often used for blowpipes because it produces a very hot flame capable of melting substances like Platinum and Porcelain. Water torch is the most popular use of this fuel worldwide. This torch is a portable device which consists of a power supply and an electrolyte cell with a pressure gauge and flashback arrestor.
Contrary to public misperception that it is too dangerous to be of any practical use, Oxyhydrogen technology is advancing rapidly and it is all set to compete for the top spot amongst alternate fuels for the future.

Flash back arrestors are fancy check valves that stop the flow of gas from going in the reverse direction. If you don't have the arrestors and are welding or cutting and the torch pops and has a high pitch whistle you have a flame traveling back up the torch handle if you don't shut it down quickly it can travel back to the tank then goodbye all when it reaches the tank. The arrestor most of the time stops this back flow, I say most because over time they can wear out allowing them to fail, they need to be checked regularly.
