When are we going to be using nuclear fusion?
i read a few weeks back that there going to be starting a machine made from 1000's of lasers that are focused into one spot, which will create temperatures hot than what you find in the center of the sun.
is this experiment really going to work and if so how long will it take for the whole world to be powered by nuclear fusion?.
Dr Brian Cox did an episode of Horizon about nuclear fusion and the machine you mentioned was on there. they have built it, it uses 96 high powered lasers (each about 4 metres long) focused on a single spot. The machine does work and it does create fusion, but it uses more energy that it creates (to start fusion it uses enough energy to power the entire united states for 3 minutes, but it created anout to power a house for the same amount of time)
The team developing it is trying to make it more efficient, but they think it wont be ready for at least 10 years
