i live in owensboro kentucky and im planning a trip to boston massachusetts. i will be driving there and back and i need to estimate how much money i will need to fuel this trip or if that is hard to estimate due to gas prices can you please tell me about how many times i will need to get gas?
i drive a 1998 honda accord that gets about 27 miles to a gallon.
from owensboro to boston is about 1,074 miles according to google maps.

I'm assuming you have the 4 cylinder Accord if you're getting an average of 27mpg. That means that you will probably get around 30-32mpg most of the way there, if not better, considering over 1000 miles of your driving will be highway, with very little city mixed in, and I'm assuming your 27mpg is averaged between city and highway. I'm also taking into account that my wife's 95 accord gets about 35mpg all highway, and estimating conservative.
To figure how many gallons it will take for the trip:
Total miles driven / MPG = total gallons of gas used
To figure how much it will cost:
total gallons of gas used x cost per gallon = total cost.
To figure how many times you will need to stop:
Total gallons of gas used / gas tank capacity = number of stops.
From my calculations:
2148 miles driven / 30mpg = 71.6 gallons used.
71.6 gallons x 2.60 (avg for regular here) = $186.16 total cost.
My 95 accord has about a 15 gallon tank, but you don't want to run it all the way to empty, so filling up when you get to around 1/4 tank left when you see a gas station going that kind of distance would be a safe bet, that way you don't risk running out. So, if you figure that would be filling up between 11 and 12 gallons, you would fill up roughly 6-7 times, or 3 times each way, and once before you leave Boston. Of course if you are at 1/2 a tank and see a sign "no stops for 150 miles" I would fill up to be safe, which could add stops, but that should be a rough estimate.
