Before you read this article on 115v mig welders, you need to promise that you will never weld a trailer hitch with anything less than a 230 v mig welder, or a 230 volt arc welding machine...Promise? OK read on.
115 volt mig welders have some limitations but they are still an excellent way to get started welding. For way less than 500 dollars, you can order a good 115 v MIG welder online and start practicing welding within a week. (sometimes shipping is even free) What can you get for less than 500 dollars? You can buy the most powerful 115 v MIG welder available that will weld up to 1/4" steel.
I don't ever recommend buying a 115 v MIG welder that is a flux core only welder...(unless it is a smokin deal like a reputable brand for less than 200 dollars). A flux core only MIG welder is just not versatile enough. Once you add the ability to weld with bare wire, lots of options become possible.
For less than 500 bucks you can buy a Hobart mig welding machine that runs off of 115 volts and welds with bare wire or flux core.
What can you do with a 140 amp 115 volt MIG welding machine?
- Fix a lawnmower deck
- build up a lawnmower or bush hog blade
- make a set of shelves
- modify or build a custom bicycle
- fix a cracked exhaust manifold ( with a few tricks like preheat and adding a nickel rod with the other hand)
- make welding sculptures
- weld patches in auto body panels
- make shooting targets for your buddies
- make a mailbox guard
- build beam brackets for an outdoor deck
- modify the motor mounts in your brother in laws 1970 Chevelle Hot Rod
The great thing about a 115 volt mig machine is that if you ever decide you need to upgrade to a 230 volt mig welding machine, The 115 volt machine is still very useful because it will run .023" bare wire which is the best thing since sliced bread for welding thin auto body patches.

Everything You Need To Know About a Gasless Mig Welder
Essentially a small MIG welding machine, gasless MIG welders are a very hand thing to have in the shed at home.
Using gasless mig wire they can very easily weld the thickness of metal that a home welder would need to work with.
There are many things that you can weld with one of these machines.
A small gasless machine can weld mild steel sheet metal, box sections, angle iron and plate. What it really comes down to is how much power the mig welder has. The thicker the metal, the hotter the weld needs to be. You can weld up box trailers and do repairs to them. You can make modifications to you street cars or race cars. Any little welding project a gasless mig welder is handy to have.
110v mig welder, 115 and 120 volt gasless wire feed welders.
There are a range of smaller machines that you can get. These are the smallest of the small and have input voltages in the range of between 110volts and 120volts. This is all depending on which country you live in and also what part of the country you live in. In general these machines have the least amount of power available for mig welding.
220volt and 240 volt MIG
Now the machines in this range of 220 volts to 240 volts will offer the most power that you can get from a single phase mig welding machine.
Duty cycle-beware of this....
Mig welding duty cycle will also vary between machines. In a nut shell you want a machine that has a higher rated duty cycle value. This will mean that it can weld longer than a machine will less duty cycle.
Pros and cons of these little units
The biggest thing going for the small machines is that they are now really cheap to buy. You can pick one up just about anywhere and they are much better and easier to use for welding jobs at home. They are light and small which makes them reasonable portable. You can pick them up and put them in the car to take around to a mate's place quite easily. Try doing that with an industrial mig.
On the downside, these machines are usually cheap mig welders and as a result some are not worth buying. Sometimes spare mig welder parts are hard to get for these machines too.
And finally gasless mig wire is rather messy and spattery compared to normal mig wire and using welding gas.
To sum it all up...
If a little bit of spatter doesn't worry you these gasless mig welders are a good investment for and workshop. You can also get dual purpose machines which can do both flux core and solid mig wire.

Bending and welding.
Bending a 1mm, 25mm diameter pipe.
Most fitters just tell me to bend it without heating?
Would it be better if heated first?
Also, I am thinking of buying a 0.5kg reel of fluxed core gasless Mig wire.
I know I can buy 4Kg reel of standard wire for the same price, but I will need to use gas with that. I am trying to work out if the overall cost difference between using these two types of wire. It’s not easy for me, because I have no idea how much additional gas will be needed for the standard none fluxed wire.

Welding wire is consumed in the units of inches (or mm) per minute. The flow rate for the purge gas is defined in cubic feet per minute (or liters per minute). Several factors determine both of these for welding, such as where the welding is being done (cross breezes and the such demand higher purge rates) and welders preferences.
I can't remember the numbers that I used when welding (its been 10 years ago).
The cost savings of flux core is quickly lost in additional labor costs to post clean the welds.
Heating a pipe or tube prior to bending changes it heat treat condition. Cold bends are better to do. With a 1mm to 25mm tube the bending equipment is not that expensive to do a cold bend.
