If you're into fast cars and racing, you'll know that there are a lot of things you can tweak on your car to make it perform better; engine, suspension, wheel and tire modifications can all make a big difference, but one key thing that many people overlook is the brakes. I started autocrossing two years ago in my Subaru WRX. It's a great car to learn on; the turbocharged 4-cylinder boxer engine packs enough punch to accelerate quickly and the AWD not only helps you get the car up to speed quickly, but it helps you carry the speed through the corners too. But the biggest drawback to a WRX is its brakes. It doesn't have the same 4-piston Brembo brakes that it's bigger brother, the STi, has. So after my first few autocrosses on my stock brakes, I realized they needed some love if they were going to stand up to the abuse I was giving them.
Since I was only racing every other weekend, I didn't want to get anything too extreme; I needed a brake setup that was tough enough to not develop brake fade after a few hot laps, but easy enough to live with in my daily commute. So after doing some research on the internet, I found that my stock brake lines at the caliper were actually made of rubber! Rubber brake lines flex, which can add a squishy feeling to the brake pedal. So I decided to add a set of stainless steel brake lines and upgrade my brake fluid to a DOT5 racing fluid while I was at it. I also wanted the brake pads to have more initial bite after I hit the pedal, so I upgraded to a set of Hawk HP brake pads. They seemed like a good compromise to me as they are marketed as a performance street pad and I had read a lot of good reviews on them.
After getting these parts installed, I went for a quick drive and I could immediately tell the difference. The brake pedal was much firmer and the brakes were much more responsive to my pedal inputs. At my next autocross, the improvements in my lap times proved to me that improving your braking system really can make you faster! The better pedal feedback and higher friction pads allowed me to brake later, producing a higher average lap speed and slightly faster lap times. Plus I was able to do all three laps without experiencing any brake fade, which meant my brakes still performed well when my tires were hot and sticky. I certainly wasn't the fastest person out there, but I could tell that upgrading the brakes had made a big improvement to the way it performed on the track.
In case you have questions or need even more specific information, here are a few additional resources about brakes and auto parts like brake rotors.
The All New Scorpio ‘Hawk’
Mahindra and Mahindra, leading auto makers saw impressive raise in its sales with the launch of its Scorpio in the year 2002. The model was a huge success in terms of pricing, looks, and performance. M&M later upgraded this model with CRDe in the 2005 and the year 2006 saw a facelift and revived suspension with coil springs. And this time M&M has is out with its latest up gradation in engine wit ‘mHawk’.
Every one knew the engine as ‘Eagle’ but it underwent a change in name to another bird of prey –Hawk for its better performance. The difference cannot be made between the old Scorpio and the newer one until you have driven. The Scorpio mHawk comes with 4 cylinders, 2.2 Liter engine producing 120bhp and torgue of 290 Nm. it gives the fuel economy of 12kmph and the upgraded version is currently available only with the VLX trim.
The mHawk’s exterior is does not undergo any specific changes other than mHawk badge, graphics on body panels and a large front bonnet scoop. Other wise Scorpio still maintains the same road rugged looks and grille.
The new interiors look classy with new beige themes and new central bezel. The seats are comfortable and the middle row slides back to accommodate the potential basketball player. Available only in one variant and that is an eight-seater VLX trim. In terms of safety, Scorpio is equipped with ABS, tyre pressure & temperature monitoring sensors. .
It also has a smart feature for parking, fitted with camera allows the visibility behind the Scorpio in the parking mirror and alerts you with a beep when the obstacle is with in 100units. It also spoils you with cruise control mode. From the 2nd gear, once the speed limit crosses 40kmph, u can take off the control from the accelerator pedal and to adjust the speed you can press the button mounted on the steering by 0.5kmph. And to get back to the normal mode you can press the accelerator pedal.
Scorpio sales are booming up with demand for the vehicle and do not plan to replace atleast till 2010. When compared to the new Safari, it provides a smoother ride but as far as off-roading is concerned, Tata still stands ahead. Priced at Rs10, 68,724 at Rs, Scorpio VLx mHwak is available in Fiery black, Diamond white, Mist silver, Turf green.
