my family and i were talking about and we came up with funny reasons and now im wondering because none of them seem right.... some were like sweeping, to clean their shoes...but i know there has to be a reasonable explenation.
First, the idea came from the Greeks where their hoplites (heavy infantry) wore horse-hair crests on their helmets. Why the horse hair? The easiest answer is based on the color, pattern and placement (NCO's for the Greeks wore a transverse crest--from left to right rather than from front to back) it made it easier to identify leaders and units.
Second, it made you look taller. This may sound childish except you've probably never faced another person trying to kill you by hand or with a knife. I have. Let me tell you, despite all the training and experience in the world, if the guy across from you appears taller and more threatening you'll have a stream of something running down your leg before the two of you ever make contact. This wasn't just related to the Greeks and Romans. For instance shako's (the tall caps worn by British troops) and the bearskin caps of Napoleon's Old Guard both served to make the troops look taller.
Now if you still think that sounds childish, think of this: in the kind of combat that occurred first with the Greeks and then the Romans, with heavy infantry clashing in tight formations, there was tremendous dust and people all around. Oh, you don't see that in films because you'd have a movie than where you couldn't see diddly. But in a heavy infantry encounter in that day and age, you'd be able to see maybe 2 people to either side of you because of the dust raised by several thousand men on a dusty plain trying to hack each other apart and retain footing in their sandles. And the nose was terrific. People shouting to intimidate or in terror or in pain as they were disemboweled so you couldn't hear commands. So some troops and especially officers wore crests on their helmets to help identify NCO's, officers or specific units. And then there were battle crests or standards (the functional equivalent of battle flags) to designate each unit that would help soldiers orient themselves on the battlefield (if the vexhilla went forward than so did you even if you couldn't hear any commands).
