Gain A Difference Welding Sheet Steel
Fred Durange, welding engineer , prides himself on his ability to match the proper welding techniques to a customer's use and solve difficult welding situations. Nevertheless he didn't have a ready response when some customers asked what filler wire he suggests for SCS steel. The reason? He had never heard of SCS fabrication steel.
Fred Durange and fellow welding expert Carl Hite investigated SCS strip steel and discovered that it had acquired a reputation as being an outstanding base material for welding. The uses they heard about were interesting, but they wished to get some first hand knowledge with the product and check it out on their own , so they contacted The Material Works to get SCS samples.
Layout of the Research
The engineers used 0.250" thick pieces of SCS steel, cold roll and Hot Rolled Black (HRB), welding each steel to itself. They set out to make fillet welds at a steady speed. They were wanting to get a quality 1/4" bead with minimal spatter.
"We employed two different filler wires we thought would be matched to these steel types," . "Our Tri-Mark Vantage is a wire that decreases the silicon deposits in the weld bead as well as minimizing spatter. The second was a copper-coated wire that functions well with minor surface mill scale due to the fact it has a increased deoxidizer content. We understood where the SCS steel Welding Instructions advise a 95% Argon/5% Oxygen mix. It was logical to utilize that mix, but also to utilize the 90 Ar/10 CO2 mixture we typically recommend."
The Results
All three steel samples generated weld beads that were generally uniform with minor spatter.
"The SCS steel performed somewhat better quality with the 95AR/5O2 mixture , just as the guidelines indicated. It had a smooth and steady arc, and very nice looking beads . On the whole, SCS sheet steel showed itself capable of producing welding speeds similar to what can be expected with clean Cold roll."
SCS welding steel is second, obtaining a good bead appearance and fine rate with the 95AR/5O2 shielding gas. SCS likewise performed very nicely with the 90Ar/10CO2 gas and the Hobart experts likened welding SCS to welding good quality shot-blasted hot rolled (not part of the test) . The two agreed that SCS steel beats hot band .
As for the various other SCS welding merits, like lowered pre-welding prep and cleanup and lowered welding toxic gases because SCS has no oil to burn off? "All we've read about those advantages adds up," commented Durange, " but we are not evaluating those factors. Sheet metal fabricators are better able to assess these other SCS benefits , in addition to cost advantages over cold roll. "

Do you need to prime the shielding gas line in a MIG welder before use?
I'm new to welding, and recently purchased a Hobart 187. I have an argon CO2 tank hooked up to the welder. When I squeeze the trigger on the gun, a valve opens by the wire drive wheels and allows the shielding gas to travel down the hose and out the tip. My questions are this:
When my welder has been sitting unused for a few days and I go to start welding something, do I need to purge the atmospheric air that is in the line between the tip and the valve that's by the drive wheel?
What I have been doing is disengaging the drive wheel and squeezing the trigger for a few seconds to start a flow of pure shielding gas. Then I engage the wheel and begin welding.
Is this the right thing to do, or can I just turn the machine on anytime and start welding (after turning on the gas at the main tank)?
The gas will be at the tip in less than a couple seconds. Unless you are welding something that it really matters for quality the then I would just turn it on make adjustments and weld. On most tanks you have a regulator and you should set the regulator each time you start up. If it is a flow meter type you have to set it while flowing gas (trigger pulled). On the pressure type (like the oxy/acetylene type) you need to set the pressure each time you open the valve (if you are not then you are not treating your regulator correctly as each time you turn the tank off you should release the pressure in the line and back the adjuster off to protect your regulator for the high pressure shock of the next time you turn the tank on.
