Here are some more information for Hydro Generator:

As the world teeters on the brink of a global energy crisis, it is imperative that we seek out alternative energy solutions to reduce our dependency on non-renewable sources. Renewable energy utilizes natural resources. Since they are naturally replenished, they can never be depleted. The most common types of renewable energy sources are solar, hydro, and wind.
The Solar Solution: The sun's energy is the most abundant, free energy available. Harnessing the power of the sun to provide thermal energy for solar space heating, solar water heating and solar pool heating produces clean, affordable energy and reduces energy costs. The sun has always been a source of heat energy and light energy. With the advancement of technology, the sun's energy can be utilized to produce affordable electricity. This is accomplished by means of photovoltaic systems. Photovoltaic technology makes use of the sun's energy to produce usable electricity.
The Hydro Solution: Hydro or water energy is an effective and abundant renewable energy solution. Hydroelectric is the process of converting the power of water into electricity. Water behind a dam is channeled through an intake where it pushes the blades of a turbine. The turbine spins a generator that produces electricity. Hydroelectric power accounts for over 10% of all the electricity produced in the United States.
The Wind Solution: Utilizing the power of the wind is centuries old. The history of the windmill can be traced back to the 7th Century Persians. Ancient mariners used the wind to power their sailing vessels; the Dutch used windmills to pump water from low-lying areas, and farmers worldwide have been using windmills to pump water from wells. The late 19th Century ushered in the era of wind generated electricity. A myriad of wind turbines are in operation today, ranging from affordable, small-scale residential systems to large-scale wind farms that supply electricity to utility customers.
Wind and solar solutions are the most promising. Not many people can build a hydroelectric dam on their property, but just about everybody can implement some type of wind or solar technology. There are a host of inexpensive, do-it-yourself guides, and manuals that provide a blueprint for building wind and solar powered systems for home use. These systems can substantially reduce your electric bill or even generate enough surplus power that you can sell back to your power company for a profit.
Once available to only the wealthy, these renewable energy solutions are now affordable for anybody who desires them. Not only will they reduce power bills, they also contribute to a more energy independent world. Lets do our part for our future generations. They will thank us for it.

Zero Point Power Generator – How To Build A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator
The permanent magnet synchronous generator, which is similar to the zero point power generator, is regarded as the primary source of electrical energy which is used commonly to convert mechanical output power of gas turbines, steam turbines, hydro turbines, wind turbines and reciprocating engines into electrical power for various purposes. Commonly these generators are referred to as synchronous generators as they function at a synchronous speed, which equals the speed of rotor matches with the supply frequency.
The synchronous generator is excited by permanent magnet system with high energy or current carrying field windings. Due to relatively higher number of poles, the permanent magnet construction would enable reduction in back iron and stator yoke. The development of low speed and innovative synchronous generators especially with permanent magnet excitation has received attention from numerous individuals around the world.
There are numerous advantages of a permanent magnet synchronous generator which are enlisted below:
1: They are relatively secure and stable during their operation and don't require any external power supply, to excite their set-up.
2: The synchronous generators don't use slip rings as in case of other traditional generators, hence they are maintenance free and simple.
3: These zero point power generator offer high efficiency and power coefficient.
4: The synchronous generators are preferred to asynchronous generators especially for their high capacities, as asynchronous ones would consume enormous reactive power and thus they are suitable for smaller capacities.
5: Voltage regulation can be achieved in permanent magnet synchronous generators which aren't accessible in induction type generators.
6: In order to maintain the power factor, the condensers aren't required in synchronous generators as in the case of zero point power generator.

Best way, and how, to create hydroelectricity off of a stream?
I have envisioned this, and pictured a large wooden water wheel (basically the turbine) connected to a small-scale AC hydro generator, like those used in dams, and a high-voltage transformer and small power pole and line, to power a remote house in the woods, by a stream. How feasible is this setup, and if not, what are other feasible setups for hydroelectricity are there and how might I carry them out?
Quite feasible. Check out Home Power Magazine. It has a wealth of information on projects like you're describing.
UPDATED: Michigan company to produce energy from St. Clair River
TYLER KULA The Observer A Michigan company intends to test a device in the St. Clair River this summer that converts water current into electricity. Ann Arbor-based Vortex Hydro Energy will place the hydrokinetic power generator in the river somewhere between the Blue Water Bridge and St.[...]
