Here are some more information for Journeyman Welding:
The typical shipyard standard for structural welders is, knowing how to use of ceramic backing tape. Every human resources personal will likely ask that question. It's not hard to weld using ceramic backing tape. It is very similar to doing an open root weld but at the same time much easier! The fact is ceramic backing tape for FCAW is a crutch for a less skilled welder. I do have to admit this type of backing on a weld joint produces root penetration that is too perfect.
Here is the trick to welding a joint with this type of backing. The angle of the FCAW handle needs to be dragged or moved backhand. The electrode needs to push the puddle deep in to the backing tape. Remember you are filling a ceramic mold. If you are welding vertical up, the angle of the electrode needs to be pointed downward! Yeah I know it sounds wrong, but that is what works.
When it comes to welding technique, it is a slow side to side motion. The main thing is to start the puddle on the edge of the bevel and allow the metal to start filling the joint. Once both sides of the bevel are fused the electrode should never leave the puddle. Otherwise the wire will lose its arc, the electrode will hit the ceramic backing tape, and pushing it off of the joint.
One thing I learned with this type of a joint is that you can walk the cup. Walking the cup is not just for TIG welding. You start by leaning the cone on the bevel then you simply point the electrode to the side of the bevel and hit the trigger. One the puddle is established you twist the cone until the electrode walks to the other side of the bevel. You just keep repeating this till you are ready to stop!

Fort mcmurray? How do I get out of here?
I moved here when I was 17 started a welding apprentiship and now almost done. I work for albian sands shell and make 100k a year easy....easy as a 20year old apprentice that's not even finshed school. I'm going to stay until I get my journeymen redseal but after that I HAVE to get out o pay2500 a month rent and hate my life work work work work. It's gross I belive in living life and enjoying the little things. I want to move to bc on the island when I'm about 24. 25. Any suggestions cause it seems like once ur hear u never leave. Sorry bout he language but F$UCK that!!!!!
Do move to BC but understand you will be making maybe 1/4 to 1/3 as much there as in Fort McMurray
