What is the difference between Polycarbonate, Lexan Plastic, and New Lexan?
I am getting quotes from a few different sign companies to replace the 'face' in our electric/backlit signs. One company quoted me polycarbonate and the other quoted lexan plastic, only the lexan quoted is literly half the price of the polycarbonate quoted. So WHY? I asked the one company what the different was and they said "nothing, just a different manufacturer..." . So whats the catch?
Lexan is polycarbonate. It is a brand name. Kind of like Kleenex is just a tissue.
Lexan has different grades, as do other polycarbonate materials. They all vary in their impact resistance, uv resistance, abrasion resistance, and thermal insulation.
If your sign will be subjected to abrasion, impact, or heavy uv exposure, you might want to use a higher grade. Most likely, the standard grade will probably do just fine for a sign.
Part of the cost difference is most likely in labor though. You might want to check the companies' references. An older, more stable company will probably have higher prices but will be less risky than using a newer, back-of-a-pickup-truck type operation.
