What is the resale value of a 1989 Lincoln Towncar?
We're havig the biggest headache trying to get this piece of crap car registered in our names. The lady at the tax office said the value of the car is almost $4000. Which means to get it registered in our name its gonna cost almost $400. Anyone know how to check the value of this car? I've been to kelly blue book and they don't even have the year 1989 as one of the options... This car won't even start!!! I don't understand how its worth $4000. Where can I go to get the ACTUAL resale value? Thanks
Tax value is set by your local PVA (Property Valuation Administrator), and they ALWAYS set tax value high in order to squeeze more taxes out of the local residents. Ever wonder why the tax value on your $90,000 home is set at $150,000 or higher??
FYI, the "Book" value of a 1989 Lincoln TC is between $3050 (Cartier edition with Leather and moon-roof) to $700 (Base model with cloth interior in "fair", but running condition). I have a 1988 TC and my tax last year was based on the value of $750. I expect this year to be less than $500! Personally, I feel your local tax office is really sticking it to you if they base your 1989 at $4K....
You can do a couple of things... first, go to the PVA office and argue the point that the retail value of the vehicle, IN PRISTINE condition, is only $3000 (retail value). If they will not lower the tax value, your second alternative is to have the title changed to "salvage", which will automatically drop the value by half or more. If the car won't even start, you have a good argument for having the value lowered or qualifying for a "salvage" title.
