Chefs/ Cooks Employment in Cruiseline from India

The exponential growth in the job sector in India has triggered an onslaught of numerous skill based Job Portfolios. Among the various arts the most pronounced yet the least understood is the art of cooking (Gastronomy). The growing demand for professional chefs is fueled not only by the star hotels but is immensely influenced by the ever-rising demand of chefs and cooks by the cruise industry all over the world.

Consortium of cruise travel agents based in Florida, USA has surveyed that in the United States alone 50 million people are waiting to go on their first cruise ever. The cruise industry is burning midnight fuel to meet this frenzy. In a never to be seen before rise in cruise ship manufacturing every ship building port in France, Germany, Finland and Japan is booked for next ten years. A cruise ship with a capacity of 3000 passengers has got 10% of its crew (150 people) working in the huge floating galleys.

In the early 80's there was a single agency in Mumbai, which recruited people to work in the cruise ships. The 90's saw a number of players entering the market and a few companies like "P&O" setting up their own office in Mumbai. The new century has seen a 300% rise in the hiring capacity of the cruise line companies with a new ship being launched every 2nd month. A survey by the National Daily indicates that 10,000 chefs and cooks are needed in the next two years.

A formal education in a hotel management college along with a minimum experience of 2-3 years in the industry is an ideal candidate to get a job into the cruise industry. The interpersonal skills and a fire in the belly approach is what we look for in the candidate says the HR Manager of P&O Cruises.

The perks of the job include (apart from the B-school graduate level salaries) to seeing the world on company expenses, working with a multi-culti work force comprising of nearly 50 to 75 nationalities on board and getting trained by some of the best known chefs in the world. The level of discipline and work ethics instilled in you stays along all through your career.

The latest trend in the cruise companies is to provide as many facilities to the crew sans the paid customers. There is also an incentive to study where all expenses are bored by the management to clear your AHMA certification or the NVQ & SVQ level certification.

Over the years human resource pool accumulated by the Indians working on the cruise ships has made talented Indians as the right candidates to get into decisions making ranks of the cruise industry. A large percentage of the employer's eye the well-educated, English proficient and professional people from India as the appropriate candidate to work in the management level. The career growth in cruise industry has never looked so bright.

The hospitality education, which started of as a noble initiative by the International Labour organization in the 1954 to open IHM's in India has met its proper usage in the skilled Indian chefs joining the International work force of cruise liners completing a full circle of events.

About the Author

BB9UK. Why is everyone down on Rex saying he's cocky, sure of himself and controlling?

What do you people expect for god's sake.. he's an executive chef in real life.. if anything he's the only one being himself. If Gordon Ramsey was in the house and was acting all meek and coy, you wouldn't stand it for a minute. If you are used to being in charge of a large number of people and relied on to meet deadlines, of course you develop a controlling manner.. He's 10 times the man than all those other eye liner wearing, buffed up, air head nancies. Who I may add are jealous because Rex has a life and a successful career on the outside and isn't a desperate as they are.

I like Rex. I agree with everything you said.
