Thinking of starting a welding business? Then you have bigger concerns than just buying welding supplies.
Seriously, it might just be the best or the worst thing ever you ever did... and I wish you luck.
So lets talk about some welding supplies you are going to need whether your welding business will be portable or in a shop environment.
Let's talk welding machines first. For a welding shop environment, You are going to need a good Tig welder, and a good mig welder. A regular old arc welder will only be used as a last resort like when your mig welder breaks, but you need one anyway just because used arc welders are dirt cheap and you just might need one.
I recommend going with Miller or Lincoln for both the TIG and MIG welding machines. They are the 2 biggest brands and it makes sense to stick with reputable manufacturers so that you can get parts when something breaks.
But what about new or used? A used Miller syncrowave 250 can be had on eBay for about 2000 dollars. A tip here is to try to get as many accessories as possible with the deal. Things like a water cooler, tig torch, foot pedal, and tungsten electrodes can quickly add up to 1000 dollars and your seller might be willing to sweeten the pot just to close the deal. Think about shopping Craigslist too.
A used Millermatic 250 is a great mig welding machine. They usually go for less than 1000 dollars. Try shopping Craigslist as well as eBay.
If your are leary of buying a used welding machine and can afford a new one, just do it. Miller and Lincoln both offer good warranties on their welding equipment. That might be worth some piece of mind. I am not afraid of used Miller welders because all of mine are used.
But what about other welding supplies like welding helmets, gloves, grinders, electrodes, torches, ground clamps, etc?
It is best to buy some things like power tools brand new. Northern Tool has some really good deals on 4 1/2" Dewalt grinders and other power tools. Sometimes they even offer free shipping. They even sell welding machines and foldable welding tables.
You can save money by buying some other small items on eBay. Especially welding supply accessories like tig cups, collets, collet bodies, mig nozzles, tungsten electrodes, etc.
These little things can add up. You can easily hold a hundred dollars worth in the palm of your hand. Many eBay sellers sell a whole batch of tig cups for what you might pay for just one at your local welding supply store.

Which is the better machine? The Lincoln Pricision Tig 375 or the Miller Syncrowave 351?
I am a growing fab shop, and I am in the market for a Tig Welder with high power and excellent aluminum capabilities.
I have always owned Miller machines but the precision tig has more power and draws less power at full rated output. Both machines have the same features and are the same price so it is a toss up at this point? Which one Is better ? The Lincoln Precision Tig 375 or the Miller Syncrowave 351? Please Help?? Ive have been talking to salesmen for both machines and all the do is say the other is crap. I need real comparitive answers!
