SMAW is commonly referred as shielded metal arc welding. It is also called as Manual Metal Arc (MMA). A consumable electrode which is coated with flux is used to make welds in this type of welding. The electric arc is formed by either using alternating or direct current as a power. This arc is formed between the metal and the electrode to weld. Shielding gas is formed when the flux which was coated on the electrode begins to disintegrate and produce vapors. This gas protects from air contamination too. Here are some basics that a welder ought to know when it comes to arc welding;
Electricity in direct current flows from negative to positive. Direct current is used to produce smooth welding. Electricity passes to and from negative and positive on a sine wave. This results in an irregular passage of current. In turn this results in more spatters.
Reverse polarity is called as Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP). Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN) is called as straight polarity. Even construction companies use plasma cutters in large-scale projects to cut and fabricate huge beams or metal-sheet goods. Locksmiths use plasma cutters to bore into safes and vaults when customers have been locked out.
One major benefit of plasma cutter is that the surface of the metal outside of the cutting area remains relatively cool; this prevents the warping and paint damage that can occur with other flame cutters. A thin heat affected zone also allows the use of templates for precise curved line cutting. Plasma cutters do well as gougers and can pierce metal quickly and accurately.
Plasma cutters are also used in CNC (computer numerically controlled) machinery. The idea behind CNC tables is to allow a computer to control the torch head making clean sharp cuts. Nowadays, CNC plasma equipment can cut thick material, which provides opportunity for complex welding seams on CNC welding equipment that is not possible otherwise. For cutting thinner material, plasma cutter is replaced by laser cutting, due to superior hole-cutting abilities. CNC plasma cutters are also used in HVAC industry. In the present scenario, there is more development in CNC plasma cutting Machinery. In the past, cutting machine was horizontal in shape, but due to improvement in technology, vertical CNC plasma cutting machines are available.

what do you use to do light metal cutting with a torch?
I have a 360 plasma torch what seetting for tin, thin sheet metal with out slag, or we have a actolyn torch what is the smallest head size do I need or can I use propane with cutting tip? Is there a web site for teaching or classes in the Portland Oregon area or basic self teaching book.
If you don't want slag, use the plasma set in the lower setting. Torch cutting (Oxy/acetylene) will leave slag that needs to be ground off.
