Here are some more information for Plastic Welding:

I-CAR is a not for profit training organization for the Auto collision industry.
Part of I-CAR's training programs involve qualification tests for welding on automobiles. With modern cars utilizing uni-body design, it is important for any weld repair to be structurally sound.
I-CAR offers 3 welder qualification tests at authorized testing sites across the United States:
- Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) Test for aluminum
- GMAW test for Steel
- Structural Steel Parts
GMAW Aluminum Test welds required
3 welds are required...a fillet welded lap joint, a plug welded lap joint, and a butt welded joint with backing. These welds are made on two different aluminum alloys and on 2 different thicknesses of aluminum.
The aluminum alloys are: 5052-H32 and 6061-T6. The thicknesses are 1mm and 2.5mm (.040" and.100")
All 6 welds must pass visual inspection tests and destructive tests.
GMAW test for Steel
The welding tests are done using 18 ga steel. There are 4 welds required for this welding certification:
The 4 welds are a fillet welded lap joint, a plug welded lap joint, a butt welded joint with backing, and an open butt welded joint.
Welding Certification for Structural Steel Parts
The welding test used for the structural welding certification test is the same type and thickness used for the I-CAR Steel GMAW (MIG) Welding Test. the test is done using a simulated structural part.
There are 2 joints required: a butt welded joint with backing, and an offset fillet weld. Plug welds are also utilized for a total of 30 welds. To pass the welding test, the welds must pass visual inspection and the overall length of the part must be within a certain tolerance. Its a distortion test along with a being a welding certification test.
I-CAR attempts to establish some standardization in weld repairs in the automotive industry.
That seems like a good thing.

Plastic Bumper Repair Is Easier and Faster than You Might Think!
If you have recently introduced your car's bumper to a pole or other obstacle, then it's time you located a good bumper repair company. Since 95% of all bumpers are made of plastic, the company you choose should be familiar with the latest techniques, such as plastic welding. Many people are not even aware this is possible. In most cases, this type of repair can be accomplished right on the vehicle!
What Type of Damage Can Be Repaired by Plastic Welding?
There are many different components on a vehicle that are made of plastic. These includes grills, interior panels, and several others. Plastic offers a structural strength that is equivalent to steel, but it has a higher elasticity level. This means that dents and dings that may cause significant visible damage to a steel part or accessory are often absorbed by plastic.
There are several types of damage that can be fixed. These include splits, cracks, warping, and even damages where there is material missing. In most cases, a split can be returned to "as good" condition within just a few hours.
How Long Does This Type of Repair Last?
One of the benefits of of this type of repair, when performed correctly, is that it should last the lifetime of the vehicle. There should be no visible sign of the weld or that any work was done. However, there are times when the plastic part will require painting in order to complete these invisible fixes.
With the combination of welding and the recommended paint procedures, there should be no trace of the procedurer and last the life time of a vehicle.
How Much Does It Cost?
Since this type of procedure is not available at every body shop, the pricing can vary. Many times a mobile company can come to you to do the work. Instead of leaving your vehicle with a body shop for days, the mobile technicians will come to your home or work. It's less expensive than a typical body shop and you won't have to pay for replacement parts. You'll find these services are very affordable and quite competitive.
A Final Thought
If you need to get that bumper repair completed quickly and easily, then it's time to look at a mobile service rather than a body shop. You can have the entire process finished in one afternoon, in most cases. You'll also love the results!

how can i bond a peice of plastic to another?
The latch in my center console of my Jeep has broken leaving the lid to "sway" back and forth ruining the hinge. Instead of losing the entire console I need to bond or mend the plastic hook to the attachment that secures/latches the lid to the console. Ive tried the stuff I used to swear by, Gorilla Glue, which is supposed to be the best glue around. It is strong stuff but it didnt adhere to the plastic, it just separated off the plastic when I applied pressure. What can I use? And unless you are absolutely sure super glue will work spare me the suggestion, I don't have much faith in it. Is there a method of welding plastic together by heating? What would I use to heat it? It has to be very strong. Buying a new peice is out of the question.
Generally, the strongest adhesive in the market are the one's that warn you to wear latex or rubber gloves, or if the product gets on your skin, it will bond human tissue and skin together, and may require medical attention to separate. There are plenty of Super Glues on the market, but not too many has a warning that says "will bond human skin or tissue" disclaimer. JB-Weld, which is sold at Walmart and most parts places, is a cold-welding adhesive that bonds metal and plastic. They come in 2 types; one fully cures in 24 hours (or maybe it was 12 hours), and the other one is fast-curing, which fully cures in one hour. I've repaired a broken metal radiator reservoir unit with this, and it saved me $85 (cost of buying a new radiator reservoir component).
