A clogged shower drain can be one of the messiest and most irritating plumbing problems; however, there is no need to call the plumbers right away! With a wire coat hanger and a few household items, you can unclog the drain fairly simply yourself.
For this project, you will need:
- an old-fashioned metal coat hanger
- a small plunger
- petroleum jelly
- a wet washcloth
- a flashlight
- a screwdriver
- white vinegar
- baking soda
- a small glass baking dish.
Start the drain cleaning process by pouring a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of white vinegar directly into the drain. Cover the drain with the glass baking dish and let the mixture sit for at least two hours. The glass baking dish keeps the mixture and gases created by it in the drain, thereby expediting the drain cleaning project. After removing the dish, pour hot water into the drain. The hot water should help to dissolve and loosen the clog before you need to start fishing down the drain.
Once you have flushed the vinegar-baking soda mixture with hot water, straighten the coat hanger and make a small hook at the end. This could be a messy prospect, so consider putting on plastic gloves and clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty.
Remove the drain cover with a screw driver, and insert the straightened coat hanger into the drain. You should be able to manipulate the coat hanger and pull out the blockage. Use a flashlight to help you locate the clog. Be careful not the push the clog further into the drain, as this may require a plumbing contractor to clear the blockage.
If the blockage is not in reach or sight, you can use a small household plunger to help remove the clog. Remember, plungers are used to bring clogs to the surface, not to push them further down the pipe. Be prepared for the blockage to make its way up the drain and onto your shower floor or into your bath tub.
To plunge your shower drain, rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly along the bottom edge of the plunger to create a seal and prevent slipping. Add enough water to the tub or shower so that the head of the plunger is submerged, and hold a wet washcloth tightly against the overflow holes above the spout. Place the plunger over the drain, and pump 15 to 20 times or until the blockage is within reach of the clothes hanger.
If none of this works, it is time to call your local plumbing contractor. Do not be ashamed to contact the plumbers at any point in the project. Do it yourself projects can easily get out of hand and cause larger problems than the original one you tried to fix. The bigger the problem you create, the bigger the repair bill will be!
