HIV Positive?
ok, so I am completly baffled here. I have been giving blood on a regular basis from the time I was 16 until I was 20. I have never come up positive for HIV. A year after I met my now husband I decided to go back and give blood. I received a letter stating I was HIV positive. They gave me a result of the tests they took, the first test came back false-positive and the second one came back positive. I then went to my Dr. to get retested and I cam back negative. Now after two years I am pregnant and I asked them to do another test. I cam back positive (I also came back positive for Chlamiddya). My husband went in and took a test and he came back negative.
So how is it possible for me to have three different results like this and my husband not be positive? I had unprotected sex once, when I was 15, and then with my husband for the past 3 years. Is there anything that could be causing the different results?

No wonder you're baffled. Look, you're really going to have to sit down with your doctor and get him or her to explain the what the results of the tests you had mean. Here's some info to get you started.
There are two main types of HIV antibody tests: screening tests (most commonly the ELISA) and confirmatory tests (in most countries the Western Blot). A diagnosis of HIV infection (what people call "HIV +") is only made if BOTH tests are REPEATEDLY positive.
The screening tests are very sensitive - they will almost certainly show HIV antibodies if they're there. So if a screening test is negative you can be confident you don't have HIV, provided you are past the window period, about 3 months after possible infection.
However, the screening tests are actually TOO sensitive. They sometimes react positive even when there are no HIV antibodies. Most positive ELISA tests turn out to be false positives, especially in people who have no particular risk factors for HIV infection such as unprotected male to male anal sex, sex with a partner known to have HIV or injecting drug use.
A positive ELISA alone does not mean you have HIV. What it means is that you need to do further tests (the Western Blot, twice) to be able to get a clear result one way or the other.
Sit down with your doctor and ask them to interpret your results. They should be able to give you a clear answer about whether you have HIV or not. It's not acceptable for you to still be wondering a year down the track.
There are a number of possible reasons why an ELISA might come back falsely positive. Pregnancy is one, autoimmune diseases or other infections can be another. Sometimes it just happens, and we don't know why.
