Do I need a fire extinguisher in my home?

It is essential to have at least the most basic of fire protection at home, which is a fire extinguisher or fire extinguishing appliance handy for any eventuality. Because of our fire loading (e.g. household appliances, furniture's and other things to make our life more comfortable), we tend to fire load our home with these things and thereby increases the fire hazards associated with it. The more we load, the higher the fire hazards.

With all these hazards around us, sometimes, accidents do happen and in case of a fire, the fire extinguisher is our first line of defense against this unwelcome event.

What type of fire extinguishing appliance do I need?

To be able to distinguish the type that you will purchase, we need to understand first the types of fire associated with our hazards.

There are five (5) types of fire;

o The first is Class A fire which is associated with ordinary combustible materials (e.g. papers, wood, cloths, etc.), which if we look around us, it represents about 90% of our fire hazards.

o The second is Class B fire which is associated with flammable liquid like gasoline, kerosene and paint thinner, which if we look in our garage, we might find some, there's always fuel in our cars.

o The third is Class C fire which is associated to electrical fires, again, if we look around us, all our home appliances are run by electricity.

o The fourth is Class D fire which is associated to combustible metal, now I'm sure we don't have it in home, these types of fire hazards are found normally in an industrial plant.

o The fifth is Class K fire, this is a new classification associated with commercial kitchen fire, and this type of fire extinguisher is required in premises that have a kitchen hood fire suppression system installed which are not found in our home.

Since our fire hazards involve the first three classes of fires, we now know that we need a fire extinguisher with an A, B and C ratings and the best inexpensive one in the market is a multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher.

What is a Multi-Purpose Dry Chemical Fire Extinguishing appliance?

A multi-purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher is rated for tri-class fire use, which uses a chemical composition of Mono-Ammonium Phosphate base dry powder, while another type of dry chemical is only rated for class b and c fire and uses a Sodium or Potassium Bicarbonate base dry powder.

To understand how Mono-Ammonium Phosphate base dry powder extinguishes a Class A fire, we need to know how a fire will start. For a fire to start, it needs three elements, Oxygen, Heat and Fuel which we called the triangle of fire, and a chain reaction for the triangle of fire we called the fire tetrahedron. To be able to extinguish a Class A fire, we can either smolder to starve it of oxygen or cool it down to remove the heat and or break the chain reaction of the fire.

What Mono-Ammonium Phosphate base dry powder does to extinguish a fire is that it smolders and removes the heat from a fire. Its physical property is to melt and adhere to a burning surface and penetrate deep down into it like gluing, the chemical reaction to a fire of the Mono-Ammonium Phosphate is it cools. While the Bicarbonate base dry powder will only turn to CO2 and vaporized when heated.

One unique properties of mono-ammonium phosphate base dry powder when use in a fire is that it helps in the prevention on the transfer of heat. The powder particle size is not less than 100 microns, due to its particle size, once discharge on a fire, a cloud of fine particles will engulf the area preventing radiated heat and convected air to transfer to adjacent spot.

How many fire extinguishers do I need to install in my home?

This will depend on how large is your home, the standard is every 75 feet travel distance should have one install in ordinary hazard area, we can start where the fire hazard is high, the kitchen. Rule of thumb is to have at least one unit available.

How do I maintain my fire extinguisher?

Maintenance should follow manufacturer instruction which is on the name tag. If we are to look at the standard, as a pressure vessel, we need to have our fire extinguisher hydrostatically tested to ensure the integrity of the cylinder every 6 years, once the cylinder is open, the chemical is discarded and refill with new chemical to protect the purity. Efficiency in extinguishment depends highly on the purity of the Mono-Ammonium Phosphate.

To ensure that it will work properly, always check the pressure indicator if it's pointer is in the green zone, and periodically invert it a few times to prevent packing of the chemical. Always mount your fire extinguisher to prevent it from damages; the best location to mount is near the exit.

What Happens To Your Body With High Blood Pressure?

What happens inside your body if high blood pressure is not controlled?

You've probably heard that high blood pressure can contribute to heart disease, stroke and kidney failure. You may understand the risk better if you can visualize what's going on inside your body.

Simply put, when your blood pressure is high, your heart has to work harder than normal, which puts both the heart and the arteries under a greater strain.

Your heart

If you work hard lifting weights, your arm muscles will enlarge. In the same way, when the heart has to work harder for an extended time, it tends to enlarge. When your blood pressure is too high, your heart has to work progressively harder to pump enough blood and oxygen to your body's organs and tissues to meet their needs. The heart muscle stretches and thickens, and the heart stops functioning properly. A significantly enlarged heart has a hard time meeting the demands put on it and can fail.

Your arteries

Arteries are the vessels, which carry blood throughout your body. When your blood pressure is too high, the arteries become scarred, hardened and less elastic. This occurs to some degree in all of us as we age, but elevated blood pressure speeds this process, which is called 'hardening of the arteries' or atherosclerosis.

Hardened or narrowed arteries may be unable to supply the amount of blood the body's organs need. If the organs don't get enough oxygen and nutrients, they can't function properly. There is also a risk that a blood clot may lodge in an artery narrowed by atherosclerosis, depriving part of the body of its normal blood supply.

If the arteries that supply blood to the heart become clogged, blood flow to parts of the heart is slowed. When one vessel is completely closed off, blood ceases to flow to part of the heart, and portions of the heart muscle are damaged. This is a heart attack.

Narrowing of the arteries may also cause chest pain, called angina pectoris. Narrowing of the arteries in the legs causes cramping and pain because the tissues are not getting enough oxygen.

Your brain

Stroke may be caused by the progressive narrowing of the blood vessels in the brain. When blood flow becomes inadequate, brain cells are robbed of oxygen, and they die. Narrowing of the vessels also leads to a situation where a blood clot cannot move through the arteries; it blocks the flow of blood and deprives the tissue beyond of oxygen. About 80% of strokes are caused by the blockage of an artery in the neck or brain.

People who suffer a stroke often are left with paralysis on one side of the body and loss of speech.

A stroke is an emergency just as is a heart attack. Its symptoms are:

Weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg - particularly on one side of the body
Difficulty speaking or understanding simple statements
Blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes
Sudden, unexplainable and intense headache
Dizziness, loss of balance or loss of coordination, especially when combined with another symptom
Sudden nausea, fever and vomiting - distinguished from a viral illness by the speed of onset (minutes or hours vs. several days)
Brief loss of consciousness or period of decreased consciousness (fainting, confusion, convulsions or coma).

Your kidneys

High blood pressure can cause narrowing of the arteries in the kidneys - just as in other parts of your body - which can lead to kidney failure.
The primary function of the kidneys is to filter toxic chemicals from your blood. This process is accomplished in specialized structures inside the kidneys. The blood pressure of the vessels inside these filtering structures is critical for their proper functioning.

When the arteries are narrowed and thickened by high blood pressure, blood flow to the filtering structures is reduced, and they cease to function properly. The amount of fluid that the kidneys can filter is reduced, leading to kidney failure. Toxic materials build up in the body. People with kidney failure need to undergo dialysis - use of a machine as an artificial kidney - and may ultimately need a kidney transplant.

The kidney has its own feedback mechanism to maintain optimum blood pressure to assure its proper functioning. When this internal mechanism senses that blood pressure is too low, it tries to compensate by raising blood pressure, which begins a deadly spiral of higher and higher pressure.

Your eyes

As in other parts of your body, the blood vessels inside your eyes may also narrow and harden due to uncontrolled high blood pressure. This can cause clot formation and bleeding inside the eye, which leads to vision impairment and even blindness.

Pressure vessel PSV best location?

What is the most preferable location to put PSV for pressure vessel? And explain why?

At top, so that, if there is liquid in tank the liquid will not interfere with the PSV operation This is evident in a water boiler or hot water heater, if steam is generated it will of course go to the top of the tank and willl be released by the PSV.

Bill.

Water pressure preventing disastrous oil spill
A PLUG made of compressed coral and held in place by water pressure is likely to be the only thing stopping more than 900 tonnes of oil gushing from a grounded bulk coal carrier onto the Great Barrier Reef.
