Tips for tig welding 4130 chromoly:
Use E70S2 filler rod. The same filler metal used for 1010-1018 steel. Not 4130 chromoly matching filler metal. Undermatching filler metal strength is smart here. Unless we are talking about a butt weld that requires 100 percent full strength, using a slightly weaker but more ductile filler metal makes sense and helps to prevent cracking.
When to Preheat
- Preheat when the part is thicker than 0.100". Some authorities say anything over 0.125" thick needs a preheat but Preheating certainly wont hurt anything and depending on the surrounding mass and heat sink, it makes sense to play it safe.
- No matter what the thickness, if its colder than 60 degrees F, preheat the part.
Why all this concern about Preheat?
The 30 in 4130 chromoly means that 4130 contains 0.30 percent carbon. Thats enough to allow it to harden if it is heated to welding temperature and cooled quickly.
Preheating slows the cooling rate. It also removes moisture which can cause other problems.
There are other applications where using other filler metals like 308 stainless are appropriate depending on engineering purposes but that is a discussion for another day. The good news is that E70s2 filler rod is very inexpensive and readily available at any welding supply store. The current cost is only around 3 dollars a pound. Its not often when the inexpensive welding rod is actually the best one for the job. So take advantage of this fact.
