Kikkerland Magnifire Solar Magnifier (MG19) Sale Price: $9.99 |
|
Believe it or not, but the designer of this item actually uses this magnifier to light his smoke. He says it has helped him to slow down his habit because there are not that many sunny days in Paris. The very flat lens, also called a Fresnel Lens magnifies up to 2.5. Probably best used for tiny print. Really, it is a cool little object. To use, slide open the magnifier. Hold it perpendicular to the sun at least 5-inches away from the surface to get the minimal focal point. Look for the pinhole in the shadow for positioning. Focus point is very bright. Don't look directly at focus point. Use with caution and always follow fire safety rules. |

Mitutoyo 500-784 Digital Caliper, IP67, LCD, Solar Powered, 0-6"/0-150mm Range, +/-0.001" Accuracy, 0.0005"/0.01mm Resolution List Price: $222.00 Sale Price: $186.10 |
|
The Mitutoyo 500-784 is one of Mitutoyo’s Series 500 MyCal Solar Absolute Digimatic Calipers and measures 0” to 6” or 0 to 150 mm with +/- 0.001” or +/- 0.010 mm accuracy. It is made of durable hardened stainless steel and uses Mitutoyo’s ABSOLUTE linear encoder technology. Coolant-proof, it meets IP 67 standards with a dust-tight, waterproof, oil-proof, and damage-resistant construction. Its hard-coated solar panels protect the solar cells storing energy for operation. Through solar power, you can measure in any location (even low-lit areas) without the need to replace batteries. This digital solar caliper has .295-inch/7.4-mm LCD characters with a five-digit display and easy-to-reach function control buttons, such as Inch/Metric to convert from inch to metric measurements and On/Off to automatically shut off the caliper after 30 minutes. Its solar battery retains its origin point for life (even after the caliper has remained in complete darkness), without requiring the caliper to zero-set its LCD display due to low light intensity. Although identical to dial and vernier calipers in its ability to make precise measurements, this digital solar caliper also has the LCD, which clearly shows values and increases reading reliability over the other types. The 500-784’s LCD also reflects all ABSOLUTE system activities. The Absolute Scale (ABS) function tracks the origin point—even after shutoff. In environments with available light of 60 Lux or more, the caliper becomes active and you can immediately start measuring, without zero resetting or worrying about overspeed errors. You can make and compare incremental measurements without having to subtract the first measurement from the second. The 500-784 is IP67 rated for dust, water, and oil protection. It has the ABSOLUTE electromagnetic induction linear encoder and hard-coated solar panels, for increased durability in storing energy in solar cells for safe operation. It weighs approximately 1 lb (453 g) and measures outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID), depth, and step, where the butt end of the fixed jaw measures one end of a work piece before its upper/lower or inner/outer "steps" are measured. Outside Jaw Depth is 1.57”/ 39.87 mm, Inside Jaw Depth is .65”/16.51 mm, Upper Jaw Length is 1.57”/ 39.87 mm, and Lower Jaw Length is 1.57”/ 39.87 mm. Range is 0 to 6"/0 to 150 mm, LCD Resolution is .0005"/0.01 mm, Repeatability is .0005"/0.01 mm, and Accuracy is rated + or - 0.0001"/0.02 mm. Also included are inch/metric and on/off automatic shutoff function buttons. A Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function is available with the optional Data Hold Unit (959143), sold separately. An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and scale contamination and counting value composition errors. A rolling thumb wheel makes fine adjustments and a thumb screw locks the scale’s position. Response speed is unlimited. The caliper has no SPC (Statistical Process Control) output capability. The built-in solar cells can store energy for up to three hours of caliper operation. The caliper can be used continuously above 60 Lux (or luminous fLux) ambient illumination. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers all give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices. Founded in Tokyo in 1934, Mitutoyo is a leader in the metrology field, producing high-quality measurement products, including mechanical, dimensional gauging products, focusing on micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other measurement tools, as well as output gauges, interfaces, data collectors, and analysis software. Mitutoyo formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, Illinois, with additional locations in the U.S. and Canada. The Mitutoyo 500-784 comes in a fitted, plastic case. |

Here are some more information for Solar Powered:

The advancement of solar power technology is very rapid especially in this decade thanks to funding programs initiated by the government. This alternative energy source is clean, renewable and environmentally safe.
There are two main type of this energy source. What are these?
1. Photovoltaic or PV system - this converts sunlight to electricity using panels to absorb heat from the sun. This system produces DC power which with the use of an inverter is converted to AC power.
2. Thermal - this heats or cools air or water. This uses a water tank, piping, plumbing valves and a collector which is used to absorb the sun's heat.
New and emerging types of this technology include spray-on solar cells and desert mirror.
What is the significance of this alternative source of energy?
The main thing is its cost effectivity. This offers considerable savings and energy giving efficiency. Using the thermal system can result to 75 percent savings in energy expenses. Installing PV systems is quite expensive however this could also result to big savings after the material and installation expenses are paid for.
Can these systems be installed anywhere?
Solar systems can be customized to withstand a certain area's climate. For example, in cold areas, an anti-freeze system is used.
What are the common misconceptions about solar power technology?
Many think that this energy source will not be sufficient to provide the necessary energy required by a household. However, the fact is that harnessing sunlight can provide a steady supply of needed energy for about 25 years.
Currently, silicon is used by most solar panels which is a very costly material but alternative materials which are cheaper may bring prices down in the near future.

Do solar powered fountains work?
I have a medium sized pond that is in a shaded area of my garden. I've seen a solar powered fountain but I'm not sure if it will work. I live in the Manchester area so not a lot of sun.
Should I buy one?
My experience has been that the solar-powered ones are not very powerful, and often don't work at all, such as on a cloudy day. There are adaptors you can purchase that make it so you can place the solar panels in a different area than the fountain so that if you are in shade, you can theoretically place the panels in the sun, but even this way does not seem to give the fountain much "oomph." If it were me, I'd save my money and buy a "real" (i.e., AC current powered) fountain with a reliable pump allows me to change the power/output, and will run whenever I want it to, instead of only when the cosmos allign and conditions are just right.
Hope this helps.
