What are Plastic Extruders
Plastic extruders are used to create a wide range of items, including plastic tubing, trims, seals, plastic sheets and rods. Extruder is the machine for producing more or less continuous lengths of plastic sections out of a selected type of plastic resin. There are a number of extrusion techniques available such as co-extrusion, offset extrusion, oriented extrusion, overcoat extrusion, cold extrusion, ram extrusion and much more.
The essential elements for a thermoplastic extruder are a tubular barrel, usually electrically heated; a revolving screw, ram or plunger within the barrel; a hopper at one end from which the material to be extruded is fed to the screw, ram or plunger; a die at the opposite end for shaping the extruded mass.
Extruders may be divided into three general types:
* Single Screw Extruder
* Twin or Multiple Screw Extruder
* Ram Extruder
Single screw extruders and twin screw extuders are the most widely used extruders. The screw that is used to push the resin out of the die is the important component of a screw extruder. In the earlier days rubber screw were used but the rubber screw was not able to give enough amount of shear into the polymer. Therefore, screws were designed that would start deeper in the feed and gradually taper shallower in the metering section to apply more work on the polymer as it was going from the feed to the discharge.
Basic screw design
The screw is usually contained inside a tight fitting barrel driven by a variable speed motor and gearbox. It is a highly efficient device capable of processing several tons of plastic per hour, even in modestly sized extruders. The screw is divided into three division the feed section, the compressor and the metering section.
The feed section of the screw mechanism stores and delivers resin pellets from a gravity fed hopper into the jacketed screw to begin the plastic longitudinal movement. Screw threads move the plastic using axial rotation. Within the barrel, heaters help the plastic develop a tack to increase its friction against the barrel wall. Without this friction the plastic could not be conveyed forward and would merely rotate inside the screw.
In the transition or melt stage, the root diameter of the screw increases while the height of the flight decreases. The resin is melted here because of compression, shearing and heating produced in the barrel. Now the melt moves to the metering section, where the screw diameter remains constant. The melted plastic which is under high pressure now is pumped into the extruder die.
Barrier Screws
The resin is sometimes not completely melted in the basic extrusion screw. The barrier screw in designed to counter this problem. Additional flights are attached to the transition section so as to separate molten and solid plastic to different channels. As the solid pellet moves forward it melts due to shear against the wall and thus melts and flows into the liquid channel. Thus the solid channel narrow gradually and the liquid channel widens.
Mixing Screws
When mixing two different additives, a more efficient way is to mix extrusion materials with twin screw extruder. In this method two screw rotate with or against each other and have special mixing features, such as kneading blocks and forward and reverse capabilities. Some single screw systems can, however, be used for mixing.
Though general-purpose screws are available, different plastics require differently calibrated extrusion screws. The length-to-diameter ratio, pitch, length of each zone and helix angles of a screw must all be matched to the plastic type being used. The screw must also be designed to suit a specific type of die.
Extrusion screw design has been improving over the years, with new innovations and ideas that help in perpetually adjusting the process so as to meet the needs of specific applications.

Custom Build Your Own Stainless Steel Metal Hose
Stainless Steel Corrugated Jacketed Flexible Metal Hose is used for heat transportation from core hose to jacket or vice versa. Stainless Steel Flexible Metal Hose with large surface results in a higher heat transfer efficiency. This jacketed metallic hoses is suitable for high degree of flexibility, vibration eliminator, resistance to penetration and damage, fire & moisture resistance, economical installation and longer life. Stainless Steel Braided Hose is used for wide range of chemicals, petroleum products, super heated steam, fuel and oil lines, coolant, liquefied gas [cryogenic], vacuum etc.
Metal hose can be used in many industrial applications where ambient or hose media temperature is much higher than industrial or hydraulic hose parameters. Furnished with the fittings attached, hose is good for misaligned connections and anywhere vibration is a concern. Hose ID is ribbed. Can be used outdoors. The hose is composed from an inner hydro formed, corrugated thin-walled tube that is externally braided or unbraided for vacuum service.
The flexible tube can be welded to a variety of fittings and connectors, providing compatibility with industry interfaces. There are many leading manufacturer of stainless steel braid hose, flexible metallic braided hose connectors, braided hose assembly, composite hose and fluorpolymer hose for use in industrial as well as OEM, semiconductor, oil and gas, vibration absorbers and aerospace applications. Stainless steel wire braid on the hose assembly (SS1) provides the hose with higher internal pressure capability by acting as a restraint against hose elongation and dampens vibration without significant loss of flexibility.
A second layer of braid (SS2) may be used to increase pressure rating provided the test pressure is not exceeded. This can result in permanent corrugation deformation. Stainless Steel Metal hose can be used in many industries such a Pulp & Paper Mills, Chemical Industries, Pharmaceutical, Semiconductor Industries, and Vacuum Applications etc. As the temperature increases, hose working pressure decreases.
After you have determined the proper alloy "Working press De-rating factor" and match the alloy of the hose and braid with the highest temperature to which they will be exposed (either internally or externally) to obtain the proper de-rating factors. Then multiply the hose's maximum working pressure by the most limiting temperature de-rating factor. Pulsating, surge or shock pressures, like those encountered by quick opening or closing valves, can inflict severe damage on a hose. If your application entails pulsating pressures, the working pressure should be de-rated by ½. If your application entails shock pressures, de-rate the sated working pressure to 1/6 of its value.
Verify that the minimum bend radius of the hose is less than the bend radius required. Remember that the hose's minimum bend radius will change with pressure. To determine the minimum bend radius for the type of hose you intend to use. Match the line for the hose's I.D. with the pressure requirement of your hose to find the recommended bend radius for our HHF hose.
The material that you choose for the hose and braid must be compatible with the media that will flow through the hose's as well as the environment in which the hose is installed. When determining chemical compatibility, be sure that you know the temperature and concentration of the chemical or chemicals. Although there are many resources to confirm chemical compatibility, two of the industry standards that you may find useful are the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and the Compass Corrosion Guides.

Antique pistol, unknown maker..marking of REG JACKET N2 8g (I think, I don't have a magnifer) pearl handles,?
have photos if anyone interested, and value of pistol which belonged to my deceased uncle and has been in a lockbox for years, needs cleaning but I dont want to damage it; no cracks in pearl handle. Not sure if metal is Nickel or stainless steel. All parts work. Has scroll work on barrell and body.
I have since found out this is a: It is a Blue Jacket made
by Hopkins and Allen Co.. That company and others like Bacon Arms and
Merwin, Hulbert & Co. made alot of pistols and marketed them to various
department stores where they were marketed under a wide variety of names
such as:Captain Jack, Mountain Eagle, Ranger, Bonanza, Conquerer,
Express, Gem, Governor, Guardian, Little Giant, Red Jacket etc. etc.
They are affectionately referred to by collectors as 'Suicide
Specials'. Some did have pearl or ivory grips and some were engraved.
THIS PISTOL IS UP FORSALE. CONTACT ME IF INTERESTED AND I WILL EMAIL YOU PICTURES.
I'm no expert but I enjoy collecting antiques. So if you want to shoot me some pictures and I'll take a crack at it.
