When Rudolph Diesel invented his diesel engine in the late 19th century, it was designed to run on vegetable oil diesel. Because fossil fuels were cheaper than vegetable oil, this aspect of his discovery was never pursued.
Interestingly, in 1912, Diesel was quoted as saying "The fact that fat oils from vegetable sources can be used may seem insignificant today, but such oils may perhaps become, in the course of time, of the same importance as some natural mineral oils and tar products are now."
Enthusiasts of the motor vehicle have experimented with alternate fuels throughout the 20th century, many of them successfully using vegetable oil as a fuel. There was also periodic research conducted in that time, but it mainly occurred when there was a shortage of petroleum. Biodiesel continued to be the preferred alternative fuel because no modifications were needed to the engine.
Both new and used oil can be utilized as a diesel fuel. Waste or used vegetable oil (WVO) comes from restaurants and food processors, after it has been used for frying food. Unused oils are called straight vegetable oil (SVO) or pure plant oil (PPO) to avoid any confusion with the blended fuel called biodiesel.
Rapeseed or canola is the plant most often used for the fuel, although sunflower oil is being researched for its suitability as well. In the South Pacific, some nations are using coconut oil as a diesel fuel, in an effort to become more independent. The coconut oil works well in places that have temperatures higher than 17 degrees Celsius.
The main problem with using this type of oil as a diesel fuel is its viscosity or thickness. It needs to be thinned by heating it prior to use, otherwise it could damage the engine. This is a particular problem in cold climates. It is possible to convert the engine to ensure the safe use of this particular diesel. Some exponents also blend the two fuels to avoid the viscosity problem.
The response from government, on the subject, varies from country to country. Some governements allow the fuel to be used, other have legislated against it, some have formal trials operating but there seems to be more concern over lost revenue in fuel taxes than in the fuel itself.
There continue to be many issues to be resolved before vegetable oil diesel becomes a common fuel, including availability of supply and a united approach to making the oil more suitable for diesel engines.

Converting A Car To Biodiesel
Converting your car to run on biodiesel can help you save a lot of gas. And this alternative fuel emits less carbon dioxide, making it more environmentally friendly than an engine which runs on conventional fossil fuel.

Prices can vary, for the equipment and the labor. Also, make sure that the kit is compatible with the make and model of your car. You could find a mechanic to install the kit for you, but you can also save a couple of dollars if you install on your own.
Most conversion kits are sold with instructions that are easy to follow. There are three typical modifications that are required, for converting your car to biodiesel. These are: 1) SVO Fuel Tank, Hose/Seal 2) overhaul for the fuel system, and 3) modification of the heating system. Running your car on biodiesel can help you save money in the long run. This is one way of not just helping yourself, but your environment as well.
