Metal joining methods through the process of welding continue to advance. One of the newest advances is a process of plasma arc welding and cutting developed by the Linde company. The system utilizes plazma which is a gas heated to extremely high temperatures and ionized which allows it to conduct electricity. This plasma gas transfers an electric arc to the metal to produce gas heat temperatures as high as 50,000 degrees F.
While this process which is similar to the TIG welding system it offers many advantages and improvements to the welding industry the advantages it offers in cutting metal are probably much better known and appreciated by small or medium sized sheet metal and auto body shops.
For more than a hundred years the accepted method of cutting metal has been the oxyacetylene torch. The oxyacetylene torch which burns through metal is a very effective cutting method on metals greater than one eighth inch thick. Cutting thinner metals especially when dealing with thicknesses of one sixteenth inch or less makes the process much less desirable.
The heat generated while cutting through the metal and the relatively slow travel along the cut line will very badly distort the thin metal and leave a large amount of slag or distorted metal all along and on both the upper and underside of the cut line. This residue must be removed normally by grinding which is a labor intensive task.
Because auto body shops regularly work with very thin auto body metals the old oxyacetylene gas cutting method has always been less than satisfactory. It is in these types of shops where the plasma arc cutting machines excel.
Because the plasma arc produces such high heat, using up to 50,000 volts of electricity, which is concentrated on the cut line and not spread over areas adjacent to the cut and the torch travel along the cut line is very rapid, metal distortion is all but eliminated. The finished cut in most cases is very clean and needs no clean up. Another advantage to the auto body shop is that the plasma arc is able to cut through painted and rusty surfaces which have always been a problem with auto body work.
The field of metal welding and cutting has become so advanced that traditionally new advanced methods appear very rapidly which not only make working with exotic materials possible but also help businesses to operate at a profit. The future seems very bright for this field.
