Not really. You need a smooth surface. Pie tins have too many non-smooth edges and while they are not sharp points, they are definitely not smooth.
What would work better is a couple of stainless steel bowls welded or epoxied back-to-back. The more spherical, the better.
The other thing I have seen used is, flexible aluminum ~3" diameter hose for dryer vents. Handle it carefully. Take a piece of pipe at least 38" in length and join the ends together to make a 12" toroid. Press out any sharp edges where the ends are joined.
