Wires used in a wire electrical discharge machining system are the core of the system. These wires act as electrodes that produce electrical erosion to separate the material from the conductive piece.
The regular economy brass EDM wire is very cost effective and especially the choice of cost conscious operators. Though the wire is cheaper, it still promises good quality and is consistent, clean and straight. The brass wires are even available in the high performance brass EDM wire range. This wire is mainly alloyed with a higher percentage of zinc than the standard variety. Many users prefer these wires, as they believe that the higher zinc content promotes speed.
High performance coated EDM wires are getting increasingly popular with wire electrical discharge machining users. The zinc coated brass wire is preferred, as it enables higher speed for cutting. Wires are also produced using different types of core materials, such as pure copper, for better electrical conductivity. The copper and zinc alloys provide higher tensile strength. The coatings are mainly of beta and gamma phase brass and in layers.
Specialty wires are also available for specific tasks, such as the Compeed EDM wire. This EDM wire has a steel core with an intermediate layer of copper and an outer layer of beta phase brass. The Compeed EDM wire is extensively used where excessive breakage is a problem. Similarly, molybdenum EDM wire is highly favored for applications requiring a wire diameter between .002' and .006'. Molybdenum EDM wires have a high melting point and high tensile strength.

How Important is the Hid Ballast for the Hid Conversion Kits Xenon Lights
HID Lights are getting more and more popular in the automotive industry, you may also notice that there are a pair of hid bulbs and pair of ballasts for your hid conversion kits, and how important is the ballast on the whole kit ?
To make it simple, we need to know what is the HID light.
An HID light consists of a glass tube that contains tungsten electrodes, gas and metals. You see light emit from the tube when an electrical arc is struck across the electrodes. The gas helps the light to start, and once the metals are heated they function to produce the light. Gardeners enjoy the benefits of using these lights because they provide light that most closely resembles sunlight, a definite plus when you are growing plants indoors without exposure to sunlight. They are also cost efficient, because they last longer than other light bulbs and are more energy efficient.
Functions of the hid ballast
The ballast is used to start the lamp and to allow the electricity to continue flowing through the bulb to keep the light on. The ballast’s function is to control the electrical current running through the glass bulb so that there is just enough current flowing through so that the light ignites and is maintained, but not so much that the bulb is destroyed. Having said that, it is clear that you must use a ballast when you want to run your HID lights in order to control the electrical current; otherwise, they will not work properly.
There are three different types of ballasts that are used with high intensity discharge lights, and they include magnetic ballasts, electronic ballasts, and digital ballasts. A magnetic ballast is also called a core and coil ballast, which refers to the components inside the ballast. Along with a capacitor, they work together to control the current to ignite the light and keep the energy flowing at exactly the correct rate for the bulb. Some magnetic ballasts also come with an igniter, which are used in coordination with sodium and metal halide lamps. Electronic ballasts use electronic circuitry to control the electrical flow within the HID bulb. A digital ballast works on a higher frequency, so it produces more light but uses less energy to do so. The digital aspect of the ballast allows it to function at consistently correct temperatures, which helps the bulbs to last longer.

Can a high voltage arc be drawn underwater?
I have been doing alot of experimenting at school with electricity, especially with the "Cold Fusion" process which to me is fascinating. I have wondered if an HV arc can be drawn underwater using a HV transformer (neon/flourescent light transformer) using around 9K of volts with 35 miliamperes.
As the anode and cathode I will use tungsten electrodes with
Thorium content.
Using a conductive base or solution (baking/bicarb soda I figure is safe) would help I presume. So, can it be done and if so, what would be the pros and cons.

What you are proposing violates occupational safety regulations unless you've received the proper training and permits. Keep in mind that getting an electric shock from touching charged water is extremely dangerous because water reduces the skin's resistance to electricity, especially if you have salts dissolved in it. 35 mA is 3.5 times the minimum requirement to send a heart into fibrillation. Given the high voltage and water combination, there is no question that your body's resistance would be low enough to draw the full current limit.
That said, an arc is when you create a bright plasma conducting path. Dissolving bicarb in the water will make the *water* conduct instead, and load down (short) the HV, suppressing its voltage. You'll likely just heat the water that way. Your best bet is to use distilled water. Give the electrodes sharp points to enhance the electric field near the points. Bring the electrode close enough underwater, and you'll get your arc. Note that arcs create high pressure, and the water may splash out of the container and electrocute you.
