can chrome be used inside of an engine....such as crankshaft?
today being veterans day i learned a little history about airplanes and one thing that cought my attention was that the p51(or some other plane) used chrome on the inside of the engine to reduce friction and hear where it is possible for two pieces of metal to come in contact with each other (the crank and camshaft) i have looked on google trying to find out if this was true or not and couldnt come up with anything .....also if it is true is it possible to do the same in a high performance automobile engine
They are not chromed but are machined to a fine shiny tolerance. If it were chromed there would be great overheating problems due to chrome not conducting heat away. Also, chrome will wear away much quicker that machine steel, so chroming bearings is not a good idea.
