If you are anything like me then you are as excited as a 6 year-old on Christmas day when you get a new tool to work with. When I got my first plasma cutter I was pumped and ready to whip it out and start cutting, but I put it off. I wanted to learn a bit about plasma cutter safety; that is the smart thing to do. The following safety ideas are written for light duty plasma cutters that use compressed air, not large scale industrial plasma cutters that use gas mixtures.
- Plasma cutters work on a different principle than welders. Essentially, when you are plasma cutting, all of the materials become part of an electrical circuit that you can open and close with the plasma cutting torch. That being said, electrocution is not much fun! Make sure that you do not stand, lay down or kneel in water. Make sure that your clothes are dry. Wear well insulated gloves and boots and ideally you would be standing on dry insulated rubber mats. Sometimes working in damp areas cannot be avoid; for example, if you are doing work on logging machinery on-site. If you find yourself in a situation where surroundings are damp, take extreme precaution.
- While cutting, never touch the torch body or the work piece and do not pick up at cut pieces that have fallen. Keep your hands to yourself.
- The output voltages of a plasma cutter (100-200 Volts) are much great the output voltages of welding torches.
- When you are clamping the work cable to the work piece make sure that they are touching metal to metal. DO NOT attach the work cable to the piece that is going to fall away after you finish your cut. Also, where you attach your work cable should be free of dirt, paint, rust, etc.
This is list is obviously not all-encompassing, so make sure that you do more research on plasma cutter safety ideas.
Plasma cutting is different than regular welding. If you do not know what you are doing you may risk serious injury. Find out more about plasma cutting at http://www.glowingplasma.com
Here are a Few Tips That Make Work With a Welding Machine a Lot Easier
With the increasingly demanding industrial needs, almost all sectors of activity depend more or less on welding; knowledge of the operation processes, capacity to read welding symbols from blueprints and advanced work skills are usually the main characteristics companies look for when hiring welders. But the most important issue is the way the employee safely manages to operate the welding machine. There are certain protective steps that need to be taken in order to make sure that the process is completed safely and efficiently. Here are a few tips that make welding a lot easier.
The place where the welding machine is located must be selected very carefully; the process must be carried on in a dry area where clean air circulates all the time. Such a measure is absolutely necessary since there are all sorts of chemical fumes that result from the technological process and they are highly risky for the operators' health. In case open air access is not possible, the welding machine must have a special ventilation system installed in its very proximity, for the very same reasons that we have already stated. Furthermore, there should be no flammable substances anywhere nearby the welding machine: paints, solvents or other chemicals increase accident exposure.
The weld area needs to be cleaned prior to the application since any traces of paint, oil, rust or other impurities reduce the efficiency of the welding machine. The employee operating it must wear all the protective apparel required by the occasion: fireproof gloves, apron and a special helmet; all these prevent the exposure to radiation, sparks, spatters or fumes that result from the usage of the welding machine. Furthermore, all the settings of the welding machine need to be adjusted in accordance with the specificity of the metal that is going to be worked on; failure to do so could lead to burn outs or low arc penetration.
In case you have not made up your mind whether to buy or rent the welding machine, you can decide by setting a clear plan of action. The best way to do so is to answer a few simple questions related to the extent of the investment in relation with the expected results. For occasional welding processes, a rented welding machine is the most advantageous idea; you should only think about purchasing one in case the working time of the welding machine covers at least 60% of the activity period. Last but not least, a used welding machine should also do for someone who does not want to invest too much money in the business; second hand welding machines are usually very reliable due to the liability of the engine.

clothing to use while welding?
well im going to start welding tommaro and im going to wear pants long sleeve shirt lether gloves/gauntlets lether apron sneaker type shoes safety glasses and a welding mask is that good enough or what else should i wear? oh and willa brand new hoodie get ruined while welding lol
Weld "berries", the sparks and pieces of metal that fly off while you are welding will find their way into any possible opening. I used to do some production welding wearing "sneaker" type steel toes. On a regular basis, the berries will burn through the area where your laces are. You will also burn up your laces quite frequently also. If the pain of a piece of hot metal between your toes doesn't bother you, the sneakers will work. Best bet is a pair of laceless boots. Yes, a hoodie will get ruined the first day. Try long sleeve denim or similar material. It will be solely for welding in because it will also get ruined.
