Cheap welding helmet
Cheap welding helmet
I use a cheap welding helmet all the time. One of the best places to buy a welding helmet is online. I can remember ringing around all the local welding supply shops and asking for prices.
I was totally blown away at how much these welding helmets can cost. For someone like me who doesn't do that much welding at all, I could not see the point in spending big dollars. I ended up buying a cheap auto darkening helmet from my local hardware shop.
I actually bought it from Mitre10 (Australia) as at the time they had them on special for about $80. The thing was though that none of the local welding shops had anything in stock that was below $200.
I can understand their point that if you are welding all day it's better to spend more money on a quality welding helmet.
Some of the more popular and better-known brands are from Miller, Speedglas, Optrel, and Cigweld.
The cheap helmet I have is the “Tecmen” brand. So far one of the problems I have had with this helmet is the plastic strap that goes around your head has broken in one place. I have had to fix it up with some strong tape.
One of the downsides to buying a cheap welding helmet is that finding spare parts may be a problem. For example where I bought the helmet from, last time I checked, they do not sell spare clear lenses or spare head straps.
All helmets that comply with ANSI standards are designed to filter out most of the dangerous and harmful UV hand infrared emissions.
Some of the cheapest helmets might only have the one shade setting, with mine you can actually go from about 9 to 13 in shade darkness. This allows for a wide range of welding possibilities. From low amperage TIG welding right up to heavier stick welding and flux cored welding.
Another area that you might want to look at is how fast a cheap welding lens can switch over to its filtered welding mode. The more expensive welding helmets will switch a much faster rate. Inside them they have adjustable controls.

Cheap ways to fix a blown headgasket?
selling cars because of blown gaskets sucks, so is there any cheap way to fix a blown head gasket?
I have a welder, and JB Weld, and I really don't care about the engine so long as it runs.
guys, guys, I don't care about the engine... as long as it RUNS, which means I don't give a flying hoot about how ghetto it is, I just want it to RUN, thanks!
Sorry there is no cheap way to fix a blown headgsket! However if you do your own work, you will cut the expense much as 75% or more (possibly 90% on some cars)!
I blew a head gasket about 4 years ago, and Thought I would try (the easy way out), so I bought one of those $125 "pour it in radiater repair things" -- (should have known better!) After replacing hundreds of head gaskets, I thought I would see if the "new stuff works"! So I put it is as instructed, drove car as instructed, and it "stopped the leak" ok, (as soon as I put in a new engine!) I sort of "seized up", overheated way worse than befoe (from friction on cylinder trying to seize up)-- anyway it ruined the head, and would have to pull engine down and rebuild before I could depend on it!--- So for $200 I bought a engine out of a wrecked one and put it in! Last fall the headgsket went out on that one, --so I pulled the head and looked it over, cleaned it up and put in a new headgasket, - cost with antifreeze, timing belt, and headgasket and valve cover gasket (not valve grind gasket set)-- less than $100,-- (Plymouth garage wanted $850 because it was "only a 4 cylinder" engine!) I did not grind the valves, or have head re-surfaced, - so this was the "cheapest of the cheapest" job I could do! Now there is about 10K mi on it, and it actually runs better now than it did when I put it in! You see the machine shop that would do "what I wanted to have done" was 48 miles away,- and I would have to take a day to go up with it to have work done, and then a couple days later go up again to get it! I had just moved and could not find my strerightedge, so just looked across head and guessed! All I had was a beat up truck (that only ran for me)! -- So I did the quickie on car so my wife could limp to work for a few days -- Well that was August,-- When it took it apart I foiud out that somebody had put the timing belt on one tooth off, (and the only way you cold tell exactly where everything was - was with the valve cover off)! Perhaps this is why the headgasket went, - of course there were other circumstances too, such as sitting in junkyard for 4 years, and having had somebody replace timing (belt that was not put on right),-- and the fact that the engine had about 100K on it !..........I live inTexas, where "close" is 25-30 miles,- but anything bigger than than 9,000 population is more than a hundred miles away! So you need a car pretty bad. (even if you need a loaf of bread & don't want to bake it yourself)!
So if you really want to do it cheap, buy yourself a "Haynes Auto Repair Manual_, less than $20 where I bought mine AutoZone)! This will tell you how to do everything except rebuild automatic transmission - even has wiring diagrams in back of book! After 55+ years of being a mechanic, I still buy one for every car I own! Saves me time and money, -- if you take car to mechainc, he will appreciate it too! Just get one specicificlly covering your year and model vehicle!
