Women and men have shaved their hair for thousands of years. Scientists believe that the first shavers or razors were made in 30,000 B.C and were made from flint and that shaving was part of some kind of ritual, body modification and body art. For many primitive tribes, it was considered a form of status symbol and wealth. In 3000BC, there were advancements in metallurgy in countries like Egypt, India and Greece. Because of these advancements, they were able to make permanent and reusable razors. The straight edged razor was not invented until the late 1700's by Benjamin Huntsman. It is a razor that can fold into its own handle like a jack knife but without the spring. This kind of shaver is still used today in most barber shops around the world because it is said that it can give the closest shave compared to other razors. However, very few people use it for personal use because of safety reasons. In the 1800's, the first safety razor was invented. It was a stick shaver that had a blade that can be fitted into a razor guard.

In 1895, King Camp Gillette an idea flashed through his mind about a razor that is safe, inexpensive and had a disposable blade. With the help of William Nickerson, he was able to realize his invention in 1904 and started selling them as the Gillette Safety Razor. During the First World War, Gillette struck a deal with the government to equip soldiers with razors and blades which totaled 3.5 million razors and 32 million blades.

Col. Jacob Schick invented and patented the first electric razor in 1928 and was further developed by a bigger company. Prof. Alexander Horowitz, another important inventor from Philips Laboratories based in the Netherlands, invented the revolving electric razor. The razor that he invented had a shaving head of cutters that cut off hair at the skin level. This new type of razor did not caught until it was feature in a movie in the late 30's.

During the 1950's many companies started selling cheap wholly disposable razors. In the 1970's, razors with disposable cartridges came out. They have twin blades that can cut closer to the skin. Then the three-bladed cartridges came out and just recently, the four bladed cartridges.

In the early years of the electric shaver, it had to be plugged into an electric outlet and can only be used as a dry shaver. Today, most electric shavers are cordless because they have built in rechargeable batteries. Some can be used with shaving creams and even some can be used while taking a shower.

The Chronicles of Savile Row 1818 to 1858

When you’re involved in the fashion industry, like we are, it’s wise to learn as much about the evolution of styles and progress of fashion, because some one may ask you an awkward question.

Savile row is a good place to start researching. As you will witness it has been the leading edge for innovations and fine tailoring for centuries.

Here are just a few excerpts, for your reading pleasure and information. There is a lot even we did not know.

1818: Burlington Arcade, a glassed-over esplanade of shops adjacent to Burlington House is constructed under the patronage of Lord George Cavendish who resides at No 1 Savile Row (now Gieves & Hawkes) where Brummell was a guest before his fall and exile in 1814.

1821: Joseph Ede, who would eventually give his name to Ede & Ravenscroft, assistsguv'nor William Webb as Royal robe maker when Prinny is finally crowned King George IV in particularly overwrought pomp and circumstance after enduring years of Regency deputising for his 'mad' father King George III. Walter Grant Norton opens his tailor's shop on the Strand. Norton & Sons would relocate to Lombard Street in the City and carve a niche for itself as the definitive City tailor before finally relocating to the Row where Norton & Sons remains today.

1846: James Poole's son Henry inherits the firm from his late father and earns his title of 'Founder of Savile Row' when he makes the Savile Row-side workshops of his father's tailoring shop at No 4 Old Burlington Street into a grand, Palladian entrance to a bespoke tailoring Pantheon called Henry Poole & Company at No 32 Savile Row.

1849: Henry Huntsman establishes his tailoring firm H. Huntsman & Sons specialising in riding breeches and sporting clothes. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert become customers as do the vast spider's web of European Royal houses connected to the Royal couple. Five of Queen Victoria's granddaughters subsequently become Queens of Spain, Romania, Greece, Norway and Empress of Russia.

1850: James Lock & Co invents a Savile Row icon: the Bowler Hat. The Bowler was commissioned by William Coke (a relative of the current Earl of Leicester) to be worn by his gamekeepers as protection against falling pheasants and poachers' sticks. The Bowler is still called a Coke at Lock.

1852: James Gieve acquires a partnership with Joseph Galt (established in 1823 and incorporating Meredith); christening the firm Galt & Gieves. His equally ambitious sister Elizabeth independently holds Queen Victoria's Royal Warrant as Dressmaker and Milliner (an honour she holds until her retirement in 1889 a year after James's death).

1858: Henry Poole earns the first of his Royal Warrants from the newly crowned Emperor Napoleon III of France to whom Poole and Baron de Rothschild advanced £10,000 to stage a coup in France to establish The Second Empire. At the accession of Emperor Napoleon and his Empress Josephine, Henry Poole erects an audacious gas illuminated eagle-and-coronet light show above the faÇade of No 36: a tradition he repeats on all great Royal occasions connected to customers of Henry Poole.

What should I name my character?

I need help naming a guy character for this story I have to write for English. He's a skilled Australian huntsman who roughs it out in the wild looking for big game, and despite that I guess is also fond of animals. He doesn't mind being isolated from society for periods of time but is friendly and cheery around people too. Hmm, appearance-wise he's kinda tall, thin, dark hair...that's about it.

I need a cool name for this guy! I haven't decided what his last name will be, but there's a good chance it will be "Dangerfield" or "Dodgers". I was thinking probably a one-syllable name that's not too common. Maybe like...Zeke? or Cliff? Any Australian names? I'd like any and all suggestions =) Thanks!

I like the name Jean...Its kinda isolated and mysterious sounding, but its all up to you :D

Environment in '10 better than '94, says Barbour
(CNN) – The man who ran the Republican National Committee in 1994 when the GOP retook both chambers in Congress says the environment in this midterm election year is better than it was 16 years ago. “The political environment for Republicans this first half of April, 2010, is better than it was the first half of [...]
