Mary Young Pickersgill made what is probably the most famous United States flag. Measuring 30 feet by 42 feet, The Star-Spangled Banner flew above Fort McHenry during the battle of Baltimore and inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that would become the National Anthem.
However, Pickersgill wasn't simply a maker of flags. She was a woman left alone to make a living in a man's world. When Pickersgill's husband, John, died in 1805 while seeking employment in England, she was left to find her own way to survive. Flag making ran in the family because her mother had followed the same profession upon the death of Pickersgill's father when she was just two years old. Working with a crew of seamstresses that included her teen-age daughter, cousins and slaves, Pickersgill managed to make the huge flag that required something like 350,000 stitches. She did much of the work herself, rising early and sewing until midnight for six straight weeks to finish the flag.
By all accounts, Pickersgill was a respected and dignified woman despite having to work for a living; at least one description identified her as a "gentlewoman of modest circumstances." In 1828, Pickersgill became president of a group of women who looked out for fellow widows or wives who had been abandoned by their husbands. In those days, this was a major calamity because women had little means of support for themselves and their children. If family and friends could not or would not help, single women and their families could be left destitute. The group calling itself the Humane Impartial Society of the City of Baltimore had been meeting since 1802 and gathering funds for the support of needy women. In 1849 the group began building a house that would basically be an old-age home.
In 2002, the Pickersgill Retirement Community marked 200 years of "good deeds" in Baltimore toward those in need. Today, 250 residents live in a modern facility in Towson, Md.

Indo Pak War shall be a futile exercise.
Some people in India and Pakistan are of he view that there shall be an Indo Pak war in the very near future. All the TV channels are showing us preparations of war on both the sides. armed personnel are seen on both he sides. There are news that Pakistan has already called back its forces from the side of Afghanistan and has deployed those forces on the borders touching India.
Actually Pakistan had been preparing terrorists and it had been sending those terrorists to India and it is on record that those terrorists had attacks on Red Fort and then on the Parliament. They had attacked two hotels in Mumbai and killed about three hundred people. India has declared this attack as war against India and India has sent a lis of people who had been arranging attacks against India and Pakistan is not accepting this demand and hence it is in air that there hall be a war between India and Pakistan. All the news papers are giving this news and those are expecting that the war between India and Pakistan is eminent.
But India shall not invade Pakistan because India does not want a war with Pakistan. Both the countries had been one and unfortunately they came into existence in 1947 when Hindustan was divided and now another country Bangladesh had come into being. We had already conducted two was and in both these wars we had been the losers. We are facing this indirect war though terrorists and Pakistan knows that it could gain nothing out of this indirect war. If there is another direct war, both the countries shall lose much would lose their men too.
This war shall create more problems for both the countries People from both sides will suffer. Therefore, Pakistan should accept the demand of India and must close all terrorist centers. Some terrorists which have been demanded by India those should be located and handed over to India or all such terrorists e located and tried in Pakistan. If Pakistan had been established these terrorists, this practice should be stopped because Pakistan is not gaining anything out of this proxy war in India. We are developing countries and people want peace. The terrorists are like the devils who eat their masters when they are not given work. We both the countries should sign no war pact and we should ensure peace to the people so that they could go ahead.; We should be good neighbours and we should live in peace. Pakistan must note that it would o get this part of Kashmir nor it would ever get another place for the Muslims living in India. We shall have to unite India and Pakistan one day we shall have t o comeback and form old Hindustan because this division in 1947 had been a biggest mistake in history. We shall be trying those people and there shall be an ex post facto execution of those who had divided Hindustan. This division was on the wrong side and wise people of tomorrow shall correct this mistake.

how long does z-pak take to work?
i was treated for strep throat 2 weeks ago with penicillin. i took all my meds for the full 10 days. a couple days after i stopped, my sore throat was back. my doctor gave me an rx for a zpak. this is my 3rd day on it (my 4th pill and there are 2 left) and i still have this raging sore throat. when i took the penicillin i literally felt better the first day i took it. is there any way the zpak could be ineffective for me or does it just take longer for some people to feel better?
should have worked by now. ask doc to culture your throat to see what antibiotic it is sensitive to. doesn't sound good.
